AB - In recent times, there has been a revived interest in utilizing medicinal
and aromatic plants (MAPs) for the treatment of diseases and enhancing the
productivity of farm animals. Thanks to their bioactive compounds, MAPs can
enhance the immune system, reduce the risk of disease and improve overall health
and welfare. This is especially important in the post-antibiotic era, where the search
for alternative options is becoming increasingly urgent. Although the mode of their
action is still unclear, today it is known that MAPs can modulate the microbiota
and promote gut health, leading to improved digestion and nutrient absorption.
Some components of MAPs act against viruses, bacteria and parasites. Additionaly,
the use of MAPs in livestock farming can also have environmental benefits.
Livestock methane emissions are a significant contributor to greenhouse gas levels.
Recent studies have shown that certain bioactive compounds found in MAPs could
inhibit methanogenesis and reduce the number of methanogenic microbes in animal
gastrointestinal tracts. As a result, researchers are exploring the potential of MAPs
in methane reduction strategies. Plants could also play a prominent role in
obtaining functional and enriched foods to contribute to animal product quality and
human health in general. This review highlights the importance and potential of
using medicinal plants in farm animal breeding, particularly in the context of the
One Health concept, which acknowledges the interconnectedness of human,
animal, and environmental health.

AB - In the last decades, there has been a trend present in the world to increase the size of dairy herds while increasing the yield of milk per head. In addition to environmental and economic benefits, this trend carries certain risks for the welfare of cows because in conditions of increased agglomeration of cattle the possibility of spreading of pathogens is also increased, there are less opportunities for adequate control and cows are exposed to greater selection and production stress. Research of the relationship between herd size and welfare quality parameters is still not sufficient to make relevant conclusions. Starting from that, the aim of this study, conducted in Serbia, is to examine the influence of herd size on parameters related to providing good feeding and housing conditions as important segments of the overall welfare of dairy cows. The assessment of given welfare parameters was done by Welfare Quality® Assessment Protocol for Cattle (2009) on 16 dairy farms of different herd sizes (large, medium and small) and housing management. The results indicate that there are significant variations in welfare indicators in each of the observed groups, which is why the size of the herd cannot be taken as a parameter that explicitly determines the quality of welfare. However, individual observation and comparison of welfare parameters between groups indicate that small herds in our production conditions could be identified as the greatest risks to the welfare of cows. In small herds, the highest share of cows of poor (4.62%) and fattened condition (8.76%) was found, as well as the lowest freedom of movement because cows on small farms are mostly reared in a tied system. Average values of indicators: lying down time (6.24s), frequency of collisions with equipment (13.25%) and high dirt contamination of cows (65.6-89.8%) further emphasize the issue of providing comfort in small herds.

AB - The production traits of gilts were examined in two pig herds for three consecutive years. The study included 3,610 gilts of 3 genotypes, originating from 84 boar sires. The test included only those boar sires who had 10 or more daughters. At the end of the test, the weight and thickness of the fat (FT1 and FT2) and depth were measured by anBMD ultrasound apparatus. The aim of this study was to determine the phenotypic and genotypic variability of the observed traits in the performance test of gilts: age at the end of the test (FA – final age), lifetime daily gain (LDG), fat thickness 1 and 2 (FT1 and FT2) and back muscle depth (BMD). In the first herd there were 1228 gilts and in the second 2382 gilts tested. Within the Landrace (L) breed there were 1962 gilts, Large white (LW) 1324 and Duroc (D) 319 gilts. In the first year, 885 gilts were tested, in the second 1145 and in the third 1580 gilts. Based on the results obtained, the genotype of gilts was found to have a statistically significant effect (P<0.001) on FT1, FT2 and BMD, while LDG was unaffected (P>0.05). Considering the farm as a source of variation in gilt traits, it was concluded that the farm had a highly significant statistical effect on the traits tested (P<0.001). The year of testing of gilts as a source of variation in their traits showed a high statistical influence (P <0.001) on all traits examined. Observed traits - fat thickness 1, 2 and BMD were highly statistically dependent (P <0.001) on the weight at the end of the test.

The LSD test (Least Significant Difference) was used to compare the bulls of different age groups and the results of this test showed in some cases significant differences. This test showed that there was no significant difference in ejaculate volume between six-year-old and four-year-old bulls, but in two-year-old bulls a significant difference to older bull groups was determined. The results showed that there was a significant effect of the bull age (p<0.001) on the ejaculate volume and the number of doses per ejaculate.

AB - The body weight of calves in the earliest period of their life (age
from 0 to 7 days) is under the greatest influence of the farm and the season of birth.
The farm manifests its influence most often through the conditions of nutrition and
housing and the organization of the technological production process, while the
influence of the birth season is manifested through microclimatic and nutritional
conditions, as well. The most common deficiencies related to the nutrition of
newborn calves are related to: inadequate colostrum supply in terms of quality,
quantity and time of colostrum intake, which is closely related to the organization
of the technological production process on the farm. Dietary deficiencies affect the
body weight of calves at birth and at 8 days of age. In a study conducted over a
year (4 seasons), the colostrum diet of newborn calves of the HF breed on two
farms (A and B) with a tied housing system was analyzed. Calves were fed
colostrum on both farms at intervals, usually up to 2 hours, less often up to 4 hours
after birth. The colostrum consumed came from the mother, most often, and less
often from the other cow, while on one of the farms it was also used frozen.
However, the amount of colostrum consumed was deficient, it was 1-2 l on farm A,
and 2.5 to 3 l on farm B. The occurence of a deficient diet or other deficiencies in
the diet of calves was indicated by the average body weight, measured at birth and
at the age of 8 days. On farm A, a lower average body weight of calves (37.95 and
39.68 kg) was recorded than on farm B (40.00 and 41.80 kg) by age categories,

abstract = "The body weight of calves in the earliest period of their life (age
from 0 to 7 days) is under the greatest influence of the farm and the season of birth.
On farm A, a lower average body weight of calves (37.95 and
39.68 kg) was recorded than on farm B (40.00 and 41.80 kg) by age categories,
respectively. The average body weight of calves was statistically significantly (p
<0.01) influenced by the farm and the season of birth, as well as their mutual
interaction, but the effect of the farm was more pronounced.",

AB - Abstract: In order to examine the variability of production performance traits (lactation duration, milk yield for the whole lactation, milk yield in standard lactation, milk fat content, milk fat yield in standard lactation, protein content and yield in standard lactation), 954 cows, domestic and imported Simmental populations, were included in the study, with a total of 3641 completed lactations. Cows were located in the area of Toplica district, reared on individual farming households (tied system) and on the farm with intensive farming (free system). Based on the rearing method and origin, animals were divided into four groups: Group 1 (domestic animals reared by individual agricultural producers on individual farming households); Group 2 (imported animals reared by individual agricultural producers on individual farming households); Group 3 (domestic animals reared on the farm) and Group 4 (imported animals reared on the farm). The fourth group of studied cows showed the highest yield and protein content, while the cows of the third group had the longest lactation and the highest milk fat content. All production performance traits varied highly significantly (p≤0.001) under the influence of the combined factor of housing/rearing method and origin.

AB - Central Serbia has a long tradition of cattle farming and, as a
hilly-mountainous area it favors rearing of dual purpose Simmental breed, and to a
lesser extent, Holstein-Friesian dairy breed. The first Herd Book of Serbia was
founded in 1935. The high quality breeding animals registered are under the
control of production performance properties. According to expert report of the
Institute for Animal Husbandry and the results of the implementation of the
breeding program in 2018 in the territory of Central Serbia, there were a total of
153.979 quality breeding animals of Simmental and 16509 quality breeding
animals of Holstein-Friesian breed in the main herd. Both breeds are of national
interest and are included in the breeding-selection program for dairy cattle that are
implemented through the cooperation of breeders and breeding organizations in the
field. In Central Serbia, there are 157 registered breeding organizations involved in
breeding and livestock recording activities. In this paper, data of the Head breeding
organization in cattle farming, the Institute for Animal Husbandry, as well as
reports issued by the same entity each year were used. A tabular analysis and a
five-year trend are presented according to: the number of recorded animals,
primiparous females in linear evaluation, the realized yield of milk, milk fat and
protein, as well as the trend of the number of bull dams in the population. Based on
the analysis of the results of work on cattle breeding and selection, it can be
concluded that some progress has been made in milk production of both breeds. It
is important to emphasize that there is a significant effect of mentioned factors on
the productivity of entire cattle population in Central Serbia. Systematic work on
the breeding and selection of cattle is an important work that should be carried out
in high quality, continuously and appropriately in order to achieve maximum
effects in cattle production.

AB - The main goal of this research was to examine, using modern
methods, the variability of phenotypic correlations of production performances and
reproductive properties of Simmental cows reared on the farms of individual
agricultural producers, in different breeding areas of the Republic of Serbia. The
study of phenotypic correlations of milk performance and fertility properties in
different regions of Serbia was carried out on a total of 3.056 primi parous
Simmental heifers under control, with lactations completed within one year. The
examined animals were reared on different individual farms, and mainly in very
different conditions of housing and nutrition, depending on the breeding area. The
study of phenotypic correlations included the following milk performance traits:
milk yield, milk fat content, milk fat yield, yield of 4% corrected milk; and fertility
properties: age at first calving and service period.
The results of the study among other things indicate that although the
phenotypic correlations between the fertility and milk performance properties show
different degrees of variation, they should be taken into account in the final
assessment of the breeding value of the animal, so that the breeding selection
programs are more comprehensively designes.

AB - Modern methods for assessing the welfare of dairy cows are, among other things, often based on the evaluation of animal behaviour. In this regard, behaviour is classified as the most reliable, so‑called animal‑based indicator as its expression comes from the animal itself and indicates a measure in which it has adapted to the environment. Starting from the need to explore the state of welfare and the ability to demonstrate adequate behaviour in dairy farms in Serbia, the Welfare Quality® Assessment Protocol for Cattle (2009) was used in this study. The overall assessment of behaviour was carried out by analysing four main criteria: social, other forms of behaviour, human‑animal relationship and emotional state. The results of the study conducted on a total of 16 dairy farms (N = 4,833 cows) show that the conditions for ensuring appropriate behaviour meet only minimum standards and that the greatest welfare risks arise from the impossibility of expressing natural behaviour, such as exploratory behaviour. The most pronounced negative tendencies within the assessment of the emotional status were those expressed to distress, frustration and boredom. Although the estimated general condition does not differ substantially from the same on EU farms, the need for its improvement is imposed first of all in terms of ensuring greater freedom of movement and more stimulating environment in cattle rearing.

AB - The aim of this research was to investigate the influence of the
bull i.e. genotype on the observed traits of semen quality and to determine whether
there are significant differences between bulls in terms of semen production. The
study included 9 bulls of the Holstein-Friesian breed from the Livestock Center of
PKB Corporation. The effect of the bull on certain semen properties (ejaculate
volume, sperm concentration, sperm motility in the native ejaculate, sperm
dilution, number of doses per ejaculate, sperm motility after thawing) was analyzed
and data were collected during 2014. During this period, a total of 326 ejaculates
from 9 bulls were collected and average values for the tested properties were
determined and the effect of the bull on those properties was analyzed. The results
showed that there was a very significant effect of the bull (p<0.001) on the degree
of sperm dilution and the number of doses per ejaculate. Significant influence
(p<0.01) was found in ejaculate volume traits, sperm concentration, sperm motility
in the native ejaculate, while in sperm motility after thawing no significant effect
(p> 0.05) of the bull was determined. The LSD test (Least Significant Difference)
was used to compare the bulls and the results of this test showed in most cases
significant differences between the bulls.

kod šest genotipova svinja: dve čiste rase, Švedski Landras (ŠL), Veliki Jorkšir (VJ), kao i četiri
meleza nastala ukrštanejm ŠLxVJ, VJxŠL, Nemačkog Landrasa (NL) xVJ i VJx NL.
AB - On the territory of the Mačva and Braničevo region, reproductive properties for 1902 litters were monitored in 6 pig genotypes: Swedish Landrace (SL), Large White (LW) and crosses - SL x LW, LW x SL, German Landrace (GL) x LW and LW x GL. The following parameters were observed: number of live-born piglets in the litter, number of stillborn piglets in the litter, number of piglets reared per litter, duration of lactation (days), and litter mass at weaning (kg). All sows were reared on medium size and large farms (from 20 to 120 sows). The highest number of live-born piglets was determined for LW genotype (12.39), as well as the highest number of piglets reared per litter (11.32), while the highest number of stillborn piglets was found in sows SL x LW and GL x LW (0.50). The lactation duration was the highest in genotype LW x SL (34 days), while the greatest mass of the litter was determined in sows of the LW genotype - 93.42kg. Observing the region as a factor, it was found that all investigated parameters vary statistically significant (P<0.01), except for the mass of the litter at weaning. The Braničevo region had better results for the following parameters: the number of live-born piglets, the number of stillborn piglets, while the Mačva region showed a higher number of reared piglets, a shorter lactation duration with a higher mass of litter at weaning. By testing of the significance, it has been established that the breed highly statistically significantly (P<0.01) affects all the parameters tested except for the number of live-born piglets.

AB - From locally adapted sheep and goat breeds in Central Serbia pramenka (with its ecotypes), and Balkan and Serbian white goat are present. These breeds differ by morphological, reproductive and productive traits and their differentiation was affected by specific climatic, hydrological and nutritional conditions. Thanks to that, these breeds are characterized by the wide adaptability, disease resistance, expressed maternal instinct, relatively high fertility and a long productive life-time. The productivity of these genotypes is relatively low, which led to a drastic reduction in the number of head of locally adapted breeds, simultaneously emphasizing the more productive genotypes. These trends led to loss of genetic diversity. The consequence of these practices in sheep and goat farming is that most of the locally adapted races are endangered in different degrees (from high to critically endangered), according to the criteria of the valid Rulebook. Genotypes of sheep and goat observed in this study belong to a group of genetic resources. According to the Institute for animal husbandry's annual report for Central Serbia in 2017, number of heads for most of locally adapted breeds is in slight increase, but still is not satisfactory. Thus, the number of active animals registered in flockbook for sheep and goats by races are 10386 for Svrljig pramenka, 686 Lipa pramenka, Krivovir pramenka 616, Karakachan pramenka 139, Pirot pramenka 124, Bardoka 94 animals, Balkan goat 121 and Serbian white goat 145 animals. The highest values of live body weight (BW) for the lamb were found in the Lipa lambs (BW at birth 3,44 kg, BW after 30 days 11,79 kg and BW at weaning 27,92 kg), and the Serbian white goat's kids (BW at birth 2,56 kg, BW after 30 days 7.68 kg and BW at weaning 16,04 kg). The highest fertility indexes were observed in Svrljig strain (1,28) and the Balkan goats (1,51). The protection and conservation of sheep and goat genetic resources in the Republic of Serbia is still insufficient, although there is a shift in their conservation. However, urgent protection measures must be taken in the form of in situ and ex situ conservation to prevent the loss of genetic resources forever.

However, urgent protection measures must be taken in the form of in situ and ex situ conservation to prevent the loss of genetic resources forever., Na teritoriji Centralne Srbije od lokalno prilagođenih rasa ovaca, prisutna je pramenka sa diferenciranim sojevima, a od koza balkanska i srpska bela koza.

AB - The research was performed on Holstein-Friesian and Black and White bull dams reared on five farms of Agricultural Corporation of Belgrade - PKB. The study included 575 lactations of cows selected as bull dams and their progeny calved in the period from 2007 - 2014 and represent progeny of 24 bulls. The following dairy traits were analysed in a standard lactation (305 days): milk yield (kg) - MY, milk fat content (%) - % MF, milk fat yield (kg) - MFY, protein content (%) - % PC and protein yield (kg) - PY. Holstein-Friesian bull dams and their progeny, in standard lactation, produced on average 9239.84 +/- 1607.64 kg of milk, with a milk fat content of 3.44 +/- 0.20 and protein content of 3.21 +/- 0.12. The impact of bull - sire, year of birth, lactation order, farm, year and calving season was present at different levels of statistical significance on yield traits, while the genetic group had no influence on any of the milk traits. Bull sire, year of birth, lactation order and calving season did not influence the variability of milk fat and protein content. Heritability of observed milk traits was medium to low. The content of milk fat and protein had the lowest values of heritability, 0.014, and 0.024, respectively. The heritability of milk yield, milk fat yield and protein yield was 0.293, 0.319 and 0.273, respectively.

AB - Determining the degree of correlation between two or more traits depends to a large extent on their manifestation. The knowledge of genetic and phenotypic correlations between body characteristics of the animal and product characteristics can help define the breeding goal, but also to define and harmonize the assessment criteria. Although the phenotypic and genetic correlations between the traits of body development and type and the milk yield show different degrees of variation, they should be taken into account in the final assessment of the breeding value of the animal so that the selection programs are more comprehesively defined. The examination of phenotypic correlations of linear assessment scores of the type, milk and fertility traits was performed on a total of 303 cows of the Simental breed in the first three lactations. The examination of phenotypic correlations included the following milk performance properties in the first three standard lactations: milk yield, milk fat content, milk fat yield, yield of 4% corrected milk; also fertility traits: age at current calving and service period in each lactation; while the linear type scoring included a group of traits: type or frame, muscularity, fundament, udder.

AB - The analysis included 433 daughters of 10 bulls, calving for the first time in the period from 2007 to 2014, on 6 dairy farms of the Agricultural Corporation Belgrade AD. Fixed factors included in the model were the effects of the farm, year of calving and calving season, and as a random factor the impact of the bull sire. The observed fertility properties on the basis of which breeding values were calculated were the number of days of gestation, the age at the first insemination, the service period duration and the calving interval. Bulls were ranked on the basis of these properties and using the Spearman correlation coefficient, the degree of agreement between the ranks was determined. According to the breeding values calculated by using the Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) method, the sire 1517 was best ranked for the trait duration of service period (-34,94 days) and the calving interval (-36,14 days), relative to the average of daughters. The effects of the farm and year of calving showed no significance (p>0.05) except on the duration of the gestation. The effect of the calving season showed a very high significance (p (lt) 0.001) for the following properties: age at first insemination, duration of the service period and calving interval, as well as significance (p (lt) 0.05) for the property duration of the gestation. A statistically very significant degree of agreement between the service period and the calving interval of 0.99** (p (lt) 0.01) was determined by the Spearman coefficient of correlation, while there was no significant difference between the other properties (p>0.05).
AB - There are numerous methods for decontamination of animal feed, and a relatively inexpensive method is the application of inorganic adsorbents. Adsorbents from the group of alumosilicates are particularly important, especially bentonite. Inorganic adsorbents are able to detoxify foods contaminated with mycotoxins by their adsorption power, while minimizing the negative effects on the organism.
The aim of this study was to examine and determine whether the use of natural bentonite has an effect on adsorption of aflatoxins from food. The influence of daily intake of bentonite at different doses (30 and 50 g / head) on the content of aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) in milk of examined cows was examined. By mycotoxicological analysis of the feed it was determined that maize grains were infested with aflatoxin B1 (1.24 μg/kg) and that this was the cause of the AFM1 metabolite in raw milk of cows. Based on the results obtained, it was concluded that the content of AFM1 in milk of cows consuming food with a daily intake of 30 and 50 g bentonite was significantly reduced.

AB - The data of the Institute for Animal Husbandry, Belgrade-Zemun have been used to investigate the variability of the properties that are observed in the progeny testing of Simmental bulls. The analysis is based on a sample of 7,845 first-calving heifers in the period 2007-2010. The tests included the following milk properties in the standard first lactation (305 days): milk yield (kg), milk fat content (%) and milk fat yield (kg). An analysis of the production traits of the first-calving heifers under control showed that their average milk yield was 4346.49 kg milk with 3.93% milk fat and yield of 171.11 kg of milk fat. Sires, years and calving season exhibited a highly significant impact (p<0.01) on all the milk properties observed in the progeny testing. Based on the BLUP solution, the rank of bulls for each trait was formed, and then the correlation coefficients of the rank, ranging from 0.402 (relationship between the yield of milk and milk fat content) to 0.989 (the relationship between the yield of milk and the yield of milk fat) were established.

AB - The study, which included 9 Holstein-Friesian bulls from the Livestock Center of the PKB Corporation, analyzed the impact of the ejaculate collection season on certain semen properties (ejaculate volume, sperm concentration, sperm motility in native ejaculate, sperm dilution, number of doses of one ejaculate and mobility of spermatozoa after thawing). For the purposes of this analysis, data for the three-year (2011-2013) and one-year period (2014) were used. In the three-year period, based on 621 ejaculates of three bulls, the average values for examined properties were calculated and the season's impact on these properties analyzed. The results show that the ejaculate collection season had a very significant effect (p<0.001) on the sperm motility in native ejaculate, and a significant effect (p<0.05) on the level of dilution of ejaculate and the mobility of spermatozoa after thawing. In the single-year period, based on 326 ejaculates from 9 bulls, the average values of the studied properties were calculated, and the influence of the season was also analyzed. The ejaculate collecting season showed a very high impact (p<0.001) on the mobility of spermatozoa after thawing, but no significant effect was found on other properties (p> 0.05).

AB - The paper presents the results of testing of the egg and egg shell quality of two light line hen hybrids (Tetra SL and Bowans Brown). There were total of 4 tests. At the end of 35, 45, 55 and 65 weeks of age, the external and internal egg quality properties were tested as well as the quality of egg shell. Testing was conducted on a sample of 30 eggs for each hybrid. The weight and egg shape index were determined for each egg, as properties of the external quality, also internal quality properties such as albumen height and value of Haugh units (HU), and of the egg shell qualities measured the egg shell deformation, the shell breaking force, the weight of raw shell and egg shell thickness were determined. The weight of the eggs did not differ significantly under the influence of said factors. Significantly higher mean values of the egg shape index at the age of 35 weeks were determined in comparison to 65 weeks of age. Under the influence of genotype, significantly higher (p (lt) 0.05) values of the albumen height in genotype Tetra SL were recorded. Albumen height in the 35th week of age was significantly higher (p (lt) 0.01) compared to other ages. Tetra SL layers showed significantly higher (p (lt) 0.05) HU values. With the increase of the age of hens the value of this parameter decreased, so, in the 35th week of age, statistically significantly higher HU value (p (lt) 0.01) was determined, compared to other ages. Deformation of the egg shell, breaking force and egg shell weight did not differ significantly influenced by genotype and age of laying hens. Significantly higher egg shell thickness values (p (lt) 0.05) were recorded for genotype Bowans Brown. With the increase of age of laying hens, there were no significant changes in egg shell thickness. Overall, it is concluded that both examined hybrids in terms of egg and egg shell quality traits have given satisfactory results. For most of the egg quality traits, better results were observed for Tetra SL hen genotype, while the most egg shell quality traits were in favour of hens of Bowans Brown genotype.
