AB  - The present research aimed to investigate the genetic trends for udder traits (fore udder attachment; rear udder height;
udder depth; front teat placement; rear teat placement; front teat length and rear teat length) and angularity of Holstein
Friesian cows in Serbia. A multi-trait animal model was used to estimate genetic parameters, through REML procedures.
In the study 10403 first-lactation cows Holstein type from 12 different regions in Serbia were included. The cows were
daughters of 221 Holstein Friesian sires. The age at first calving was from 19 to 44 months, and there were 10 stages of
lactation. Udder type traits and angularity were classified by 24 classifiers on a linear scale of 1 to 9. Udder type traits
had heritability estimates ranging from 0.03 for rear teat placement to 0.12 for fore udder attachment, and angularity had
heritability 0.10. Genetic trend for angularity of Holstein Friesian cows in Serbia shows that ribs are becoming less
angular and extremely rounded, while genetic trends for udder traits show that teat lengths are becoming longer and
inside of quarter, and udder is shallow. The genetic trend for fore udder attachment indicates there is indirect selection
for weaker udders.

AB - The objective of this research was to study phenotypic expression and factors that can affect
milk yield traits in the population of Simmental cattle breed in the Republic of Serbia. The
research was conducted on a set of data that included records on the production and origin of
Simmental breed cows displayed both in regional and municipal exhibitions in the territory of
the Republic of Serbia in the period from 2004 to 2017. A final data set included records on
production and origin of 1176 Simmental breed cows. The animals were raised in the area
covering 9 regions of the Republic of Serbia. The research included most important milk
yield traits in standard lactation: milk yield, milk fat content, milk fat yield, yield of 4% fat corrected milk (4%FCM). An average milk yield in studied population accounted for
5.520±919 kg, milk fat content 3.94±0.11%, milk fat yield 218±38 kg, while the yield of 4%
fat-corrected milk accounted for 5.474±933 kg. It was determined that region, age and
lactation had a very high statistically significant effect on studied traits while the age of cows
had no statistical effect.

AB - Cattle comprise a species of a domestic animal that is primarily bred for milk
production. The birth of a calf is the initiator for the lactation period and the sex of the calf can affect
milk yield. Additionally, a calf from a new pregnancy can affect the lactation from the previous
calving, since the mother gets pregnant and remains pregnant during most of the lactation, usually at
lactation peak. Therefore, the aim of this paper was to further investigate the possibilities of sexually
biased milk production of Holstein and Holstein crossbreed cows using data from the Republic of
Serbia. We also wanted to test the Trivers–Willard (TW) hypothesis that natural selection favors
unequal parental investment between daughters and sons under certain maternal conditions. At the
same time, this hypothesis assumes that mothers in good health and condition invest more in sons,
while mothers in a poor condition invest more in daughters. The obtained results deviate from the
view of the TW hypothesis because it was found that milk and fat yields in the first two lactations
were the highest in cows that had a female calf and were then pregnant with a second female calf
while the lactation from the previous calving was still in progress. We were the first in the world to
investigate the effect of the sex of calves at first and second calving on milk yield and fat yield in the
first and second standard lactation, depending on milk production levels on farms.
AB - In order to examine the biased milk production depending on the sex of calves, data
on calving and milk yield characteristics of 15,181 Holstein type cows in PK Belgrade, Serbia were
analyzed. A total of 30,362 lactations that were realized in the period from 1985 to 2017 were analyzed.
Data were prepared and analyzed using the SAS software package (SAS Institute Inc. Software
License 9.3, 2012). The expression and variability of investigated traits were determined using the
PROC MEANS procedure, while the effect of individual factors on milk yield traits was analyzed
using the PROC GLM procedure. Obtained results deviate from the views of the Trivers–Willard (TW)
hypothesis. The results indicate that mothers invest more in female offspring by producing a higher
milk and fat yield in the first and second lactation compared to male offspring. This is especially
emphasized under better environmental conditions. The highest milk yield (7788 kg) and fat yield
(271 kg) in the second lactation were achieved in the combination with two consecutive female
calves in the group of higher-than-average milk production farms, and lowest in the combination of
two consecutive male calves (6783 kg for the MY and 243 kg for the FY), respectively.

AB - Data set including 10860 primiparous Holstein-Friesian breed
cows first calved in the period from 2011 to 2015, was used in determining
phenotypic variability and correlation between the traits of milk yield and linearly
estimated traits of udder and angularity. The average values obtained for type traits
(angularity, fore udder attachment, front teats placement, teats length, udder depth
and rear udder height) were 6.47; 5.74; 4.96; 5.20; 5.99 and 6.25, respectively.
The values obtained for phenotypic correlations between linear type traits and traits
of milk yield ranged from -0.042 (udder depth and milk yield) to 0.335 (fore udder
attachment and protein yield). Positive phenotypic correlation (0.293) was recorded
also between fore udder attachment and milk yield which is deemed the most
important trait of milk yield while the lowest correlation between milk yields was
determined in relation to udder depth (-0.033). The results obtained indicate a
possibility of applying direct and indirect multiple traits selection which should be
conducted within a national progeny-testing programme on Holstein-Friesian bulls
by using the method of selection indexes.

AB - Modern society, over time, has accepted animals as sentient
beings. From the welfare point of view, the emotions are a reflection of the whole
permeation of the animal and its environment, which make them important and
reliable indicators. In fact, they are cross-linked with other welfare indicators such
as physiological and behavioural. Freedom of movement is crucial for the animals’
naturalness, especially in terms of their normal behaviour expression. Regarding
that, this study was conducted in order to investigate and compare the emotional
state of cows in a loose (LHS) and tied housing systems (THS). The assessment
was done according to Welfare Quality Protocol for Cattle (2009) on a total of 16
dairy farms (N=4,833 cows), seven with LHS and nine with THS. The emotional
state was assessed by a qualitative behavioural assessment (QBA), a method based
on the translation of “body language” into the numbers that can be statistically
analysed and interpreted. Twenty reliable descriptors were used, among which,
some were related to positive emotional state (e.g., active, relax, happy) and some
to negative state (e.g., agitated, nervous, distressed). Result showed that tendencies
toward positive descriptors were significantly higher (p ≤ 0.05) in LHS, followed
by lower expression of distress, frustration and apathy in animals. This resulted in
better estimation of overall emotional state in LHS indicating its advantage and
necessity of providing exercise in cows’ daily routine.

AB - Due to the ecological concerns and preservation of genetic
resources, the characterization of genetic structure of the brown trout (Salmo trutta)
was carried out on the "Braduljica" fish farm. DNA was isolated from fin clips of
10 individuals, and after that molecular PCR-RFLP methods were used for
distinguishing between Atlantic and Danubian lineages based on control region of
the mitochondrial DNA (CR mtDNA) and lactate dehydrogenase gene of the
nuclear DNA (LDH nDNA). Based on phenotypic characteristics it was estimated
that out of 10 individuals included in this study five belonged to the allochtonous
Atlantic lineage and remaining five belonged to the native Danubian lineage of
brown trout. However, results of molecular analyses showed a high percentage of
allochthonous genes among the individuals, which confirms the hybridization
between these two lineages. Also, the results showed that the selection based on the
phenotype is not adequate. In order to continue with proper broodstock
management, it is necessary to eliminate allochtonous individuals of the Atlantic
lineage from the broodstock.

AB - The objective of this paper was to compare heifers reproductive traits and characteristics of their
calves after artificial insemination performed by conventional (non-sexed) and sexed sperm on 6
commercial farms in Serbia. Conception rate was 55% and 44% for conventional and sexed semen,
an average gestation length being 274.6 and 274.9 days, respectively. Average body mass at birth
was 37.47 and 36.75 kg for non-sexed and sexed semen, respectively. The rate of stillbirths and
twinning was 6.19 and 3.78% for conventional and 7.54 and 1.13% for sexed semen, respectively.
The use of conventional semen exerted no statistically significant (P>0.05) effect on female: male
calves relationship (51.96 : 48.04) while artificial insemination by sexed semen highly significantly
(P<0.01) changed calf sex-ratio (85.10 : 14.90). First-calf heifers originating from sires whose sperm
was obtained in conventional way produced 7880 kg milk with 269 kg milk fat and 242 kg protein in
standard lactation, while first-calf heifers originating from sires whose sperm was sex-sorted
produced 8184 kg milk with 251 kg milk fat and 242.3 kg protein. Type of insemination (conventional
and sexed semen) did not significantly affect the studied milk yield traits (P>0.05).

AB - This research was conducted with the aim оf estimating genetic trend for a functional length of productive life (FLPL) in the population of Black and White cattle in Serbia. Research and bulls genetic evaluation for functional longevity were performed on a set of data provided by Agricultural Corporation Belgrade AD (PKB) which contained data on longevity and origin of 22109 cows out of which 26% records were right-censored. Functional length of productive life (FPLP) represents a time period from the first calving to culling or censoring corrected for milk production. Breeding values were estimated using Weibull method of proportional risks within survival analysis a genetic trend for FLPL was calculated using of a regression analysis. The cows included in the analysis were on average first calved in the age of 809 days and had an average share of 81.9% genes of Holstein Friesian breed. An average length of productive life was 1267 days (41.6 months). Distribution of bull standardised breeding values did not statistically significantly differ from normal distribution. An average standardised breeding value was 99. A slightly positive genetic trend was determined, that is, the length of functional productive life was by selection increased by 0.021 day at an annual level while a reliability of estimated breeding values showed a negative trend.

AB - The conducted research was aimed at constructing equations of selection index that would be used in the selection of the Holstein-Friesian breed animals in Serbia. The construction of the selection index includes the most important milk traits observed in standard lactation: milk yield (MY305), milk fat content (% MF305) and protein content (% MP305). The variance and covariance necessary for the construction of selection index are calculated using the mixed model by the method of least squares. The economic value of traits is expressed as a ratio of relative changes in costs per unit of traits included in the selection index. Livestock included in the research produced, in the first standard lactation, an average of 7681 kg of milk with 3.58% milk fat and 3.28% protein. The equation of the selection index presented in the paper is selected from the group of equations of selection index, as an equation with the highest correlation between the equation and the aggregate genotype, which amounted to 0.2156.

AB - The effect of systematic and continuous environmental factors on milk performance traits over standard lactations in 2805 Simmental cows was evaluated using the general linear model. The systematic factors included the effect of farm or breeding area, calving season, year of birth, season of birth, lactation group and their interactions. The continuous factor analysed was the effect of age at first conception. The effect of farm, lactation group and calving season on standard lactation milk performance was found to be highly significant (P (lt) 0.01), excepting the effect of calving season on milk fat percent in standard lactations which showed statistical significance (P (lt) 0.05). The interactions between year and season of birth, farm and calving season, and farm and lactation group had a highly significant effect (P (lt) 0.01) on all performance traits studied. Age at first conception, as a continuous factor, had a highly significant effect (P (lt) 0.01) on milk yield and milk fat percent, and a non-significant effect on milk fat yield. The model used to correct the performance traits over standard lactations for the effect of systematic factors was highly significant (P (lt) 0.01). The variance of the model accounted for 20.06 and 37.31% of the total variance of milk fat yield and milk fat percent, respectively. The resulting coefficients of determination (R-2) ranged from 0.20 for milk fat yield to 0.37 for milk fat percent.

AB - The work includes the review of production results, i.e. milk performance phenotypes of Black and White Holstein cows in Central Serbia. The analysis of quantitative phenotypic parameters was carried out in five regions (breeding regions) on several large and small farms which housed 1090 cows - first calving heifers.
Using the method of Least Squares - the fixed model, highly significant deviation of milk yield, milk fat from the average (P < 0.01) was established. Cows reared in the region 4 in the first lactation produced 503 kg less milk compared to the general average and 852 kg less milk than those reared in the region 3. Birth year caused statistically significant differences in milk yield and milk fat yield (P < 0.05), except % of milk protein where no significant variations (P> 0.05) were determined. Season in which the cows had calved caused a highly significant deviation of milk yield (P < 0.01) and significant deviations of yields of milk fat and protein (P < 0,05).

AB - Exceptionally important aspect in cattle production, from the aspect of production and economy, is ensuring normal and regular fertility. Every cattle breeder wants to have high-yielding animals which at the same time have good fertility. In proper cattle breeding this means that from each cow during single year one healthy calf is obtained. Use of artificial insemination has enabled that one breeding male is used as sire for several tens of thousands of progeny, however, there is always the risk that sires could be carriers of lethal and semi-lethal genes, which can cause huge losses of calves. In order to bring these undesirable occurrences to a minimum, so called bilogical test is included in the breeding and selection activities, i.e. bulls are tested through their progeny for presence of difficult calving (dystocia) abd calf losses caused by genetic anomalies. In Republic of Serbia, this test is carried out on ehtire Simmental population in an exchange of data produced by primary breeding organizations. Per each tested bull, it is necessary to have data on minimum 50 randomly selected calves. Calves are examined visually 65 days after the birth, at the latest. In the present study, the results of the biological testing of 35 Simmental bulls, sires of total 3572 calves on the territory of Central Serbia, in the period 2008-2009, are used. The effect of sires on parameters of biological test were studied: body mass of calves at birth, calf score and calving score. Also, bulls were ranked based on said parameters, male/female calves ratio and percentage of twins and still-born calves for each bull individually were determined. After the rank of bulls was established, the correlation between the rank and studied fertility traits was determined. Correlations were expressed using the Spearman coefficient. Research results show that the effect of bulls was very high p (lt) 0,001 on all three parameters of the biological test, and also that the percentage of still born calves for all bulls was within limits, with the exception of bulls Zahlo (HB 1497) and Woz (HB 1433) where it was above 5.

AB - In order to have a more precise description of dairy farm structure and characteristics of dairy production systems, as well as to assess possibilities for improving production and farming conditions in which milk production is organized, a survey based research was directed at a select group of farms across the Serbia. 1180 questionnaires have been mailed to farmers whose farms are registered for either cattle or mixed production. Questionnaire was divided into 6 sections: general information of the farm, agricultural and structural information, zootechnical information, sanitary and veterinarian information, information about education and extension, and information on the perspectives of future farming. About 59% of analyzed farms have size up to 20 ha, with average size of about 10 ha. On the other hand, about 55% farms raises up to 15 cows and heifers with average of 6 heads per farm, while 3% of farms have more than 200 cows and heifers. Over 86% of surveyed farmers intend to expand existing farm production, mainly by increasing the number of animals, stricter selection and improvement of the conditions for feeding, housing, care and milking. About 75% of farmers have expressed a positive expectation from future membership of Serbia in EU, although these expectations are not clearly defined.

AB - In this study a relationship between the milk yield and following reproduction traits: number of inseminations per conception [AIS], service period [SP], age at calving [AC], calving interval [CI] and birth weight [BW] is studied. The research involved dairy cows of European type of Black and White cattle which are being intensively improved by the genes of Holstein - Friesian breed. Mean values of general average for number of inseminations per conception, service period, age at calving, calving interval and birth weight are: 2.00; 98.78; 1088.08; 376.70 and 36.40, respectively. In general, the estimated phenotypic correlations (rp) between the milk yield over standard lactations and fertility traits were positive and unfavorable, and ranged from 0.24 for the relationship between milk yield and birth weight to 0.70 for relationship between milk yield and age at calving.

abstract = "In this study a relationship between the milk yield and following reproduction traits: number of inseminations per conception [AIS], service period [SP], age at calving [AC], calving interval [CI] and birth weight [BW] is studied. In general, the estimated phenotypic correlations (rp) between the milk yield over standard lactations and fertility traits were positive and unfavorable, and ranged from 0.24 for the relationship between milk yield and birth weight to 0.70 for relationship between milk yield and age at calving., U radu je ispitivan odnos između prinosa mleka i sledećih osobina plodnosti: indeks osemenjavanja [IO], servis period [SP], uzrast pri teljenju [UT], međutelidbeni interval [MI] i masa teladi pri rođenju [MTR].

AB - The paper presents review of authors' own and other's results representing the effects of nutritional factors in order to overcome health problems of the people. In general we are presenting the effects and benefits of consuming organically bound selenium and omega-3 fatty acids. The purpose of this article is to show how to overcome the problems related a big amount of additive and other substances presented in human food, aero pollution, radiation and permanent stress in everyday life, which induce a lot of different diseases. This is the enough reason to develop special programme for producing 'designer milk', 'designer meat' or 'functional food' with purpose to preventing, reducing and healing those diseases. The purpose of this program is not only to keep a whole population in good health, but at the same time this kind of nutrients has a great comparative benefits for export our food in the west countries.

AB - This paper reviews the main characteristics of small and/or closed livestock populations. Although the emphasis during the realization of the genetic improvement in animal breeding is put on commercial breeding programmes, autochthonous breeds, races, strains, even herds of domestic animas, at the same time represent a potentially important segment for achieving the maintenance of the overall livestock production. These programmes are particularly important for the improvement of populations of animal genetic resources, as well as for the improvement of production in rural marginal areas. One of the main parameters for determining the size, and also the potential danger of a population is a so called effective size of the population (Ne). This parameter is determined according to the available number of male and female head of breeding stock in the population or in the herd and it varies under the influence of the sexes, changes in the size of the families, changes in the size of the population during time, as well as overlapping of the generations. Apart from the improvement of the economically important traits, the breeding programmes in small populations first of all must provide the increase of the effective size of the population aiming to limit or decrease the inbreeding, as well as the decrease of the variance in the size of the family. This is mainly achieved with so called "circular breeding plans" the sires being replaced by sons in the reproduction, and dams by daughters. The shortage of the generation interval by the change of the presence of some age categories i.e. larger number of young animals and animals that are at the peak of production comparing to a small number of older animals, can additionally influence on the genetic improvement of the traits.
"cirkularnim odgajivačkim planovima" u kojima očeve u reprodukciji zamenjuju sinovi, a majke kćeri.

AB - Data of 371 Simmental bulls tested at the A.I. Centre "Velika Plana" were analyzed in order to estimate year and month of birth, test-group, herd of origin and body weight effects on body measurements and body development indices. These two groups of traits were considering as body development traits. All observed traits were measured at the start as well as at the end of test. Birth year was significant source of variation for all body development traits, while significance of month of birth was expressed at different statistical levels. Herd of origin effect was gradually reduced over the test, while test-group effect was significance only for body measurements. For body development indices herd of origin have no effect, while test-group effect was significant at different statistical levels. Body weight was very significant source of variation for all body development traits. .

Average test-on (120 days of age) and test-off (365 days of age) height at withers (HW), circumference of chest (Cir), depth of chest (DC), width of round (WR), width of hip (WH) and body length (BL) were 99.88±3.49 and 126.00±2.65 cm, 127.42±6.14 and 184.76±5.95 cm, 42.55±2.25 and 60.90±2.15 cm, 32.56±3.01 and 47.63±2.67 cm, 30.26±2.12 and 44.14±1.93, 106.69±5.99 and 147.57±4.65 cm, respectively. Average values for test-on and test-off index of body frame (IBF), index of chest depth (ICD), index of body compactness (ICBL), and index of massiveness (IM) were 106.8±4.44 and 117.13±3.11%, 42.61±1.90 and 48.34±1.45%, 119.59±5.19 and 125.27±4.26%, 127.58±4.86 and 146.65±4.30%, respectively. Heritability estimates for test-off height at withers, circumference of chest, depth of chest and body length were 0.43, 0.30, 0.33 and 0.29. Possibilities for improvement of body development traits were done according to their phenotypic and genetic variability. Obtained results confirm that exist enough variability in major body development traits in Simmental bulls which can be utilized not only for genetic improvement of milk production in their daughter, but also for improvement of overall body traits in Simmental population in Serbia.

AB - Population of domestic Simmental breed represents a dominant population of cattle in Serbia. According to importance of this breed, selection so far has been made in order to improve milk production. In other hand, beef and meatiness traits almost were ignored. Selection of dual-purpose cattle requires combining a various breeding goals and selection methods that are very differ from those applied in pure dairy or beef herds. Improving of beef and meatiness traits in our dominant cattle population will have great importance in future. The aim of this paper is to show possibility of selection for beef and meatiness traits in Serbian Simmental cattle.
Međutim, unapređenje osobina tovnosti i mesnatosti u našoj dominantnoj populaciji goveda, posmatrano kroz prizmu sve većeg značaja rasa kombinovanog pravca proizvodnje, dobijaće vremenom sve vise na značaju.
