AB - The dynamics of increasing of bodyweight of lambs is conditioned by genetic factors, environmental factors and their interaction. The aim of this work was study variability of bodyweight of lambs related to type of birth of lambs in sheep genotype of four different strains of pramenka type and four growth stage: at the birth time, at the 30, 60 and 90 days of age after birth. For this investigation used lambs of four strains (Svrljiški, Pirotski, Sjeniĉki, Šarplaninski) of sheep type Pramenka (450 lambs per strain) for study dinamics of bodyweight at the time of birth, 30, 60 and 90 days after birth during three years of experiment (2011-2013). The results showed that the bodyweight of lambs born singles was higher than bodyweight of lambs born twins in studied four sheep genotypes i.e. Pirotski (4.00 kg : 3.40 kg), Svrljiški (3.90 kg : 3.79 kg), Sjeniĉki (3.73 kg : 3.61 kg), Šarplaninski (3.81 kg : 3.74 kg). The differences of bodyweight between lambs born singles and twins was significant for genotypes Pirot pramenka and Svrljig pramenka, on the level of significance for Sjenica pramenka and was not significant in Šarplanina pramenka. At the age of 30 days, the influence of birth type on the bodyweight of lambs was not statistically significant in any of the examined strains. The difference of bodyweight between singles and twins was statistically significant at the 60 days old of lambs in Svrljig pramenka and in lambs at 90 days old of Svrljig pramenka. On the base of results is established that type of born associated with significant differences of bodyweight at the birht time expressed later at the 60 and 90 day old lambs.

AB - The main farmers goal is breeding of pure sheep breed outside the kinship. That way they want to preserve and improve qualities of the breed, such as high production of meat, milk or wool, strong construction, high fertility, length of productive life, health, etc. It is a challenge for breeders because it represents a management planning balance between homozygosity and heterozygosity. Breeding sheep in a purebred requires a certain level of genetically predictable homozygosity to promote desirable traits. Balancing is appropriate to avoid inbreeding depression. A particular problem arises in small populations, which have only hope in the line breeding system. This review paper discusses iptions to overcome this situation.

AB - In addition to genetic, the bodyweight of lambs highly influenced by environmental factors. Growth performance is an important characteristic since it determines the overall productivity of sheep production. Environmental factors such as dam age, sex, type of birth, and year of birth influenced the estimation of breeding value. In this review paper, we have observed the most important factors influencing this property. The year of birth can cause variations in lamb weights at different ages due to the effect of climate conditions. It had a significant effect on weaning weight and difference in birth and weaning weight among lambs born in different years might attribute to differences in management and environmental conditions. Body weights variation might be an effect of the quality of grass and grazing area. The ram effect has an impact on birth weight. Some research found significant effects of ram on lambs’ birth weight. Sire breed x sire source interaction detected for lamb live weight gain at birth and weaning. The season had a compelling influence on birth weight. Lambing season had a significant effect on weaning weight, and have recorded the highest weaning weight in lambs born in spring. The birth type had a significant influence on body weight. The single born lambs had heavier weight than the twin born lambs. Effect of lamb sex influenced of the bodyweight. Male lambs have better performance than the female lambs. The male lambs were weighty than the female lambs at birth and weaning. Effect of the dam, age of dam/ewe, ewe premating age, live weight at mating, dam condition scores showed an impact on lambs’ bodyweight.

AB - The aim was to examine the effect of premating age, premating weight of ewes Mis sheep breed on lamb’s birth weight, birth type, gender and the interaction between subject effects. 70 ewes of Mis breed of sheep and their F1 generation lambs produced (Mis x Ile de France) were used in the evaluation. Data concerning the ewes premating age (PMA), premating weight of ewes (PMW), lambs birth weight (LBW), type of birth of lambs (BT), gender of lambs were collected from 122 lambs born. The ewes PMA7 had the heaviest lambs with an average birth weight of 4.72 kg and the lightest was 4.18 kg from ewes PMA5. Some of the extreme values of body weight of mother corresponded to lambs with less weight. The premating weight of Mis sheep mothers with 61 kg was optimal in this regard. The order of birth weight of lambs corresponded with the type of birth of such; the single born lambs had the heaviest birth weight (5.61kg) while the triplets had the lightest birth weight (3.65 kg). According to the number of lambs, born the twin lambs have the highest percentage with 55.74% whereas an equal percentage acquired both for single and triplets with 22.13%. PMA, PMW, BT and the interaction effect between PMA*PMW significantly influence lambs birth weight (LBW). However, the Gender of lambs and the interaction effect between PMA*Gender, PMW*Gender, PMA*BT, PMW*BT found no influence on lambs birth weight (LBW).

AB - The objective of the present study was to investigate nutritional and metabolic status in Simmental cows during early and mid-lactation. Fifteen early lactating cows and 15 mid lactating cows were chosen for the investigation. Blood samples were collected to measure beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), triglycerides (TG), glucose and the activity of aspartate transaminase (AST). Early lactation as compared to mid lactating cows were found to have significantly higher (P (lt) 0.05) blood serum concentrations of NEFA, BHB and AST and lower blood serum concentrations of glucose (P (lt) 0.05) and TG (P>0.05). Significantly negative correlations were observed between BHB and glucose (P (lt) 0.01), BHB and TG (P (lt) 0.05), NEFA and glucose (P (lt) 0.05). Significantly positive correlations were observed between NEFA and BHB (P (lt) 0.05), NEFA and AST (P (lt) 0.05), glucose and TG (P (lt) 0.01). The results suggest that these parameters can serve as useful indicators of the nutritional and metabolic status of dairy cows during lactation.

AB - Despite the very favorable natural conditions, animal breeding in Serbia are still looking for a way to stabilize production. In the last decade of the 20th century, livestock in Serbia almost halved. It reduced the number of animals and total production of all types of meat. The small farms were dominant in Serbian agriculture with an average area between 3 and 4 ha. At the end of 2014, compared to 2006 the number of animals in Serbia reduced by 16.81% in cattle, 19.09% in pigs, and 26.75% in goats. Compared to 2006, we see that the fund sheep in 2014 increased by 10.98%. production of cow's milk at the end of 2014 decreased compared to 2006 by 5.98%. Unlike cattle, in sheep is an evident trend of increase in milk production by as much as 25% in the period. Goat milk from 2006 to 2014, varied and we can say that in 2014 we produced less milk 7.31%, however, shows that the quantity of milk per animal increased, as a result of selection and better growing conditions. The amount of wool decreased by 2,52% in 2014, however, due to the low interest for wool farmers is not recorded, so that the statistical indicators are not entirely realistic. Egg production increased by 21.7%, in line with the growing number of of poultry. Serbia produces 452.000 tons of meat. From that number 73,000 tons of beef, 27,000 tons of sheep meat, 258,000 tons of pork, and 94,000 tons of poultry meat. Total meat production in our country has a tendency of stagnation or slight decline.

AB - The aim of this study was to determine the influence of environmental factors affecting body weight variability of lambs in two crossbreed groups: Pirot x Württemberg and Sjenica x Württemberg. Both populations were managed under the same farm conditions. The data were analyzed to determine the effect of age of the dam, weight of dam, birth type, sex, year and season, on the birth weight and weaning weight of crossbreed lambs. Statistical analysis was performed by GLM procedure using the SPSS statistical package program. The average birth weight of Pirot x Württemberg lambs was 3.56 kg while Sjenica x Württemberg lambs was slightly higher at 3.69 kg. The difference on birth weight between the two crosses was not statistically significant (P>0.05). The average weaning weight of Pirot x Württemberg lambs was 23.54 kg while Sjenica x Württemberg lambs had higher weight at 24.37 kg. The difference of 0.83 kg on weaning weight was statistically significant (P (lt) 0.05). Body weight, depending on the environmental factors, ranged from 3.17 to 3.96 kg at birth and from 22.12 to 24.18 kg at weaning in Pirot x Württemberg lambs. Body weight of Sjenica x Württemberg lambs ranged from 3.39 to 3.99 kg at birth and from 22.69 to 25.44 kg at weaning. Statistical analysis showed that the differences were statistically significant (P (lt) 0.05) and highly significant (P (lt) 0.01).
AB - Success of crossing depends on the breeds used and the genetic distance among them, as well the combining ability of maternal and individual heterosis to make the proper choice of breeds employed in a crossing system. The aim of this study is to find the effect of genotype and crossing system on early weights and daily gain of lambs. The lambs of purebred Pirot Pramenka ( P) got the lowest body weight at birth, at 30 days, at 60 days and 90 days with a value of 3.65 kg, 9.48 kg, 14.99 kg and 21.96 kg while purebred Wurttemberg attained the highest body weight at birth of 4.48 kg. The lambs of three bred crossing (PxWxF) highest on BW30, BW60 and BW90 days. The results showed a highly significant difference on average daily gain (ADG) among genotypes (P (lt) 0.01) except on the difference between W - PxW of which belongs to the lower border of significant level (P (lt) 0.05). The highest difference on ADG was between P - PxWxF (105.950 g), wherein the lowest difference was between W-PxW (9.290 g). It can close that the attained value between pure bred Wurttemberg (W) and two-bred crossing (PxW) was almost equal. Genotype and crossing system have significant effect on body weight and average daily gain of lambs. Based on the results obtained, it shows an advantage effect of crossing system (PxWxF) when it comes on growth and daily gain of lambs.

Based on the results obtained, it shows an advantage effect of crossing system (PxWxF) when it comes on growth and daily gain of lambs., Uspeh ukrštanja zavisi od rasa koje se koriste i genetičke distance između njih.

AB - In this paper, the results of fattening and meat characteristics of lambs of the new breed of sheep in Serbia, called Mis sheep, are presented. Mis breed as a meaty type of sheep, has been developed for the past 20 years at the Institute of Animal Husbandry, Belgrade-Zemun. The total and daily gains in 1-30 days were of 7.5 kg and 250 g, and in 61-90 days the growth dynamics was even higher by 60% with the total gain of over 12 kg; the daily value exceeded 400 g. Food consumption, calculated in units of energy, was about 13.5 MJ with a slightly larger share of concentrate in the mass of gain of lambs. The dressing percentage of lambs at the age of three months was about 59%. In addition, the highest percentage of carcass meat was of the first category, followed by the meat of the second category and the lowest representation of the third category of meat. Muscle tissue had an absolute advantage over the other tissues and accounted for over 57%, followed by fat, bone and connective tissue, which accounted for the remaining 43% of the weight of three rib pattern. Mis sheep population, similar to the known foreign meat breeds, has a little more fat, which influences the better technological and sensory properties.

AB - The study included lambs of Mis population, divided into two groups (experimental and control) .All the animals fed with identical portions of meals consisted of alfalfa hay and fully concentrate mixtures. Meals are only different in the fact that the experimental group received organic selenium and contained 2000 mg of selenium / kg preparations, while the control group received inorganic selenium in the form of sodium selenite (Na2SeO3). Each animal consumed the same amount of selenium than 0.3 mg / kg of dry matter in the organic or inorganic form, which added in the mineral-vitamin premix. Diet of lambs has been ad libitum. The body weight of lambs in both (control and experimental groups), were balanced at 60 days (19.60 kg : 19.65 kg) and 100 days (31.06 kg : 32.88 kg). The result on average daily gain of the control and experimental groups were almost similar and there were no statistically significant differences (P> 0.05) in the measured values from 28 to 60 days (259.0 : 255.0 g), from the 60-100 days (286.0 : 330.0g), and on average from 28 to 100 days (274.0 : 297.0. g). Both treatment have no significant effect on lambs' performance (body weight and growth). The study results showed that the diet of lambs experimental group, based meal supplement organic selenium resulted in significantly higher concentration of Se in MLD, kidneys, liver and spleen, compared with the control group, which are consumed inorganic form of selenium. The differences between the Se content in MLD the experimental and control groups were on significance level P (lt) 0.05, while the differences in the content of Se in kidney, liver and spleen, the aforementioned treatments were statistically highly significant (P (lt) 0.01). So fattening lambs are better utilizing organic source of selenium, which is associated with better absorption of this element.

AB - The large number of sheep, especially the ones that spend the majority of time on pastures, is been fed with the meals, which do not contain all the necessary mineral substances. The level of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium on natural pastures is too low in relation to the needs of sheep. Therefore, the irregularity in the feeding of sheep occurs because of the absence of the other food sources. These irregularities are in the range from the acute mineral deficit or illness to the mild temporary forms, which could hardly diagnose, but they affect the level of production. The content of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium in the blood serum of sheep, as one of the indicators of the supplementation of sheep with these substances, has given in this paper. The average level of calcium in the blood serum of the control group of sheep was 2.61 mmol/l, phosphorus 1.04mmol/l and magnesium 1.31 mmol/l of serum. In the blood serum of the tested group, the average contents of calcium was 2.33 mmol/l, phosphorus 0.92 mmol/l and magnesium 1.37 mmol/l.
Prosečan sadržaj kalcijuma u krvnom serumu kontrolne grupe ovaca iznosio je 2,61 mmol/l, fosfora 1,04 mmol/l i magnezijuma 1,31 mmol/l seruma. AB - Two genotype of sheep have been utilized in the conduct of the experiment composed of 60 ewes from Pirot x Virtemberg as genotype 1 and 60 ewes of Improved Pirot as genotype 2. All the ewes were reared under identical conditions and without any differences in nutrition and management during the whole period under study. The collection of Milk sampling was done in morning and evening during periods (1, 2, 3) of lactation duration. The average lactation duration and average total milk of the two genotypes were very close and has a minimal difference of 0.467 day and 1.562 kg, in favor of genotype 2. The differences between genotypes were not significant (P>0,05). Regarding physical and chemical properties of milk for both genotypes, the difference were very minimal such as follows; viscosity Pa x s - 0.006, electrical conductivity Ω - 0.018, density kg/m3 -0,001, freezing, t 0C - 0.013, LD number - 0.028 total solids, % - 0.014, fat,% - 0,026, protein,% - 0.085, lactose,% - 0.038, ash,% - 0,021, acidity, 0SH - 0.209. The results indicated that the properties of milk for both genotypes were very near to each other. It can be interpreted that the breeds utilized in the experiment were comparable due to similar characteristics perhaps. The effect of genotype was very significant only for the % protein of the milk. The lactation periods were highly significant in all physical and chemical properties of milk.

AB - Research on bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC) has strongly contributed to a better understanding of disease at both global and local levels. New agents have been identified and their nature has been better known since then, as well as all the factors that predispone the development of BRDC. Serious work in a number of researches has led to results that have proven significant synergistic interactions between viruses and bacteria that lead to the BRDC and complicate the prevention and treatment of the diseased cattle. Nowadays, it is necessary to apply the latest molecular and other techniques in order to examine in detail all of the specific causes, describe them accurately and provide effective prevention. This can primarily be accomplished by producing different types of vaccines, which are to be improved constantly. Serious progress has been made in researches on immunogenic properties and antimicrobial activity of various natural and synthetic substances in order to improve the production of more effective vaccines for control, as well as the development of a new generation of antibiotics to treat the disease. BRDC prevention programs have been successful, in which great importance was given to proper vaccinations and herd management practices. BRDC is still the most important disease of cattle from an economic point of view, since it causes great losses and expenses. (C) 2013 PVJ. All rights reserved

AB - Research was carried out in population of R2 generation Pirot pramenka x Pirot improved sheep during period of three years. Lambs were divided into three groups: I from 2.5 kg to 3.5 kg; II from 3.6 kg to 4.5 kg; III from 4.6 kg to 5.5 kg. Weight of lambs was controlled at birth, with 30, 60 and 90 days of age. Average body weight at birth of the tested lambs was 3.35 kg in the first group, 4.30 kg in the second group and 5.06 kg in the third group. At 30 days of age, the body weight of the lambs was 10.19 kg in the first group, 11.39 kg in the second and 12.49 kg in the third group. All these differences in body weight of lambs at birth were statistically highly significant (P¬ 0.01). With 60 days of age, average body weight was 16.48 kg in the first group, 19.01 kg in the second and 20.49 kg in the third group. Differences between groups of lambs at this age were statistically very significant (P¬0.01).On the end of experiment at 90 days of lambs age, we have found the following values of the body weight of lambs: 26.35 kg in the first group, when the second 30.49 kg and 28.93 kg in the third group. Differences between groups of lambs at this age were statistically very significant (P¬0.01). At the age of 90 days maximum weight of the body was in the second group of lambs, or a group which body weight at birth occupied the mean of the population. Correlations between body weights of lambs vary from weak to midsized values. The highest values of correlation coefficients were found between body weight at birth and weight of lambs at 30 days of age.

AB - On a small closed population of Mis sheep the relationship was studied of the influence of inbreeding on body weight growth from birth to the age of 18 months and sperm DNA fragmentation in rams. Two groups of male lambs were used. First was composed of outbred, while the second of inbred animals with inbreeding coefficient over 25%. Differences in body weight and daily gain related to the presence of inbreeding in the pedigree were not found significant (P>0.05). The mean value of sperm chromatin damage in rams of the outbred group varied from 1.93 to 12.37%, (mean = 7.32%) and in inbred group from 13.76 to 37.67% (mean = 25.23%). Significant difference was identified between the outbred and inbred rams in the mean percentage of sperm damaged (P (lt) 0.01).

AB - The fastest phase of growth, observed in young animals, is often assumed to be linear, and linear regressions or ratios between BW gain and time are used to model growth. However, growth curves, due to their flexibility, are likely to be more suitable to describe even early growth. The research was performed in the region of Sharplanina Mountain in the population of the local Šarplanina breed of sheep. The following traits of lambs were considered: BWB, BW30, BW60 and BW90. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Pearson's correlation and multivariate linear regression model. This involved computing all possible and the best subset regression equation. Each equation was then assessed by its coefficient of determination (R2) and the constant based on the number of variable that used for the prediction. Results showed that weight of lambs from birth to weaning increased by about six times. Specifically lambs achieved an average total gain of 17.66 kg, or 196 g per day. There were a very significant correlation (P (lt) 0.01) between BWB and BW30, BW60 and BW90. Likewise, shown a very significant correlation (P (lt) 0.01) between BW30-BW60, BW30- BW90 and BW60-BW90. Also shown the coefficient of multiple determinations (R-squared R2) was 0.507 which means that 50.7% of the variance BW90, determined variance of the predictor variables represented in the model. Adjusted coefficient of multiple determination (adjusted R2) is 0.506 which means that 50.6% of the variance BW90, determined variance of the predictor variables that are in the model. Any increase in weight of lambs during the observed period of age is associated with an increase of dependent variable BW90. In particular, any increase in BW30 to 1 kg, is associated with an increase in BW90 to 1.928 kg.

AB - Estrus synchronization methods was use to control the reproductive traits of sheep, as well as bringing more females at the same stage of estrus and ovulation. According to the points mentioned above, the aim of the present study was to investigate and compare mating method and influence of fixed factors on birth and weaning weight of lambs. Statistical analysis showed that exist difference in the body weights between genotypes of lambs. In the first group, the difference in weight of lambs at birth, regardless of mating method was not significant (P> 0.05), while in the second group, the difference was slightly significant (P (lt) 0.05). As for the birth type, sex and within the same genotype, there was a statistical significance (P (lt) 0.05) between singles obtained naturally, between the triplets obtained naturally and between triplets received hormonal method. All the differences between body weight at 30 days (mating method, sex and birth type under the same genotype) were statistically significant (P (lt) 0.05).The determined differences in the body weights at 60 days (sex, mating method and type of birth under the same genotype) were statistically significant (P (lt) 0.05). The results showed that the differences (mating method, sex and type of birth under the same genotype) were statistically significant (P (lt) 0.05), except in between body weight at 90 days in twins among two genotypes obtained by natural method, which were not statistically significant (P> 0.05).

AB - The birth weight of lambs has an essential role in satisfying sheep production. Also reflected as primary factor later development of young organism. In the study included: gestation length, sire (two sires in each genotype during parenting), sex of lambs at birth, the birth weight of single lambs from well nourished mature ewes of the next genotypes: Miss (1), Wurttemberg (2) and Ile de France (3). The highest birth weight was obtained in genotype 3 with an average birth weight of 4.63 kg in sire 2 and 4.44 kg in sire 1 with a difference of 0.19 kg. Gestation length of genotype 1 ranged from 144 to 153 days; genotype 2, from 148 to 154 days and the genotype 3, from 144 to 151days. The highest average birth weight in genotype 1 with gestation length of 153 days weighed 5.10 kg. Average birth weights of male lambs in all genotypes were higher than the females. There were a very significant effect of genotype, sire, gestation length on birth weight of lambs (P (lt) 0.01), but sex have no significant effect on birth weight of lambs (0.065;P>0.05). The result achieved therefore can be explained that the effect of genotype, sire and gestation length and the interaction between subjects effects such as the next: Sire*Gestation length; Sire*Sex; Gestation length*Sex; Sire*Gestation length*Sex were highly and significantly affected the birth weight of lambs (P (lt) 0.01; P (lt) 0.05). The interactions between subjects' effects will be a good indicator to be acquainted more on their influence in a certain trait.

AB - Data from the Pirot improved sheep were use to estimate postnatal development and growth traits relationship of lambs from birth to weaning. The experiment included 360 lambs, divided into three groups (I, II, III). Lamb traits included BW at birth and approximately 30d, 60d and 90d (weaning). Lambs managed under conditions typical of the area. Male lambs in-group I had a total gain of 22.97 kg (0.255 kg/d), in group II 25.97 kg (0.286 kg/d) (P (lt) 0.01). Lambs in-group III the total gain was 24.64 kg (0.274 kg/d), which was lower than lambs of group II (P>0.05). On the other side, III group of lambs had a higher gain than the I group (P (lt) 0.01). Development of female lambs in the postnatal period was slightly weaker. Lambs of I group, from birth to weaning had a total gain of 21.27 kg, (0.236 kg/d), II group was 23.32 kg (0.259 kg/d). The difference was statistically very significant (P (lt) 0.01). Lambs of group III had a total gain of 23.54 kg (0.261kg/d) and higher growth rate then lambs of group II, but not significant (P>0.05). From the other side, the difference in comparison with the groups III and I was very significant (P (lt) 0.01). Correlations between BWB and BW30, 60, 90 are ranged from low to moderate among the respective traits and ranged between positive from 0.001 to 0.365 and negative from -0.005 to -0.279. Can conclude that the selection should direct towards producing lambs with intermediate birth weight.

AB - This paper presents the results of reproductive characteristics and body development of the new breed of sheep in Serbia, called Mis sheep. Mis sheep as a type of sheep for meat, had been developed for the past 20 years at the Institute of Animal Husbandry, Belgrade-Zemun. Main method of development is complex combinatory three-breed crossing. As material, three breeds of sheep have been used in this project, namely: Pirot Pramenka, Merinolandschaf and Ile de France. Mis sheep is characterized by a strong constitution with emphasized carcass conformation and excellent meat traits. These are very persistent long-lived animals, well adjusted to conditions of the environment. Mis sheep are white without any spots. Sexual maturity is acquired at the age of 6-8 months, what includes them into the population of early maturing sheep. However, as well as in the case with other noble breeds their first fertilization should be at the age of 10 to 12 months. Mis sheep could be considered as sheep of higher fertility because from 100 sheep giving birth approximately 150 lambs are obtained. At the age of 90 days, the body weight of lambs is approximately 34.26 kg. At the age of 18 months, when sheep are already mature but not completely developed, the body weight is 71.63 kg. Finally, at the age over of 3 years, when they are completely developed, the average weight is 78.89 kg. The body weight of rams varies from 120-140 kg, although even in this case it depends on the production phase and use of male heads in breeding.

AB - Fifteen early-lactation cows and 15 mid-lactation cows were chosen for the analysis. Blood samples were collected to measure the beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), triglycerides (TG), glucose (Glu), total protein (TP), albumin (ALB), total bilirubin (TB), urea (U) and the activity of aspartate transaminase (AST) and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT). Earlyl-actation cows showed significantly higher (P (lt) 0.05) values of serum BHB and NEFA, and lower of (P (lt) 0.05) glycemia levels compared to mid-lactation cows. High lipomobilization (NEFA >0.4 mmol/l) and subclinical ketosis (BHB >1.2 mmol/L) were detected in 6 (40%) and 14 (94.4%) early-lactation cows, respectively, and in none of the mid lactation cows. AST activities above 100 IU/1 were detected in two early-lactation and none of the mid-lactation cows. TG concentrations below 0.12 mmol/l were found in 7 (44%) early-lactation and 2 (13.3%) mid-lactation cows. Glucose levels were below 2.5 mmol/l in 10 (66.6%) early-lactation and 5 (33.3%) mid-lactation cows. Early-lactation cows showed lower blood serum concentrations of TG (P>0.05), ALB (P>0.05), TP (P (lt) 0.05), U (P>0.05) and GTT (P>0.05) activities and higher concentrations of TB (P>0.05) and AST activities (P (lt) 0.05), as compared to mid-lactation cows. These metabolic characteristics were correlated with DMI and energy balance (EB). Blood serum values for glucose, TG, BHB, NEFA and AST showed that early-lactation cows suffered from metabolic disturbances, associated with ketosis, and some degree of hepatic lesions, probably due to fat infiltration. These serum parameters may have a key role in evaluating the metabolic status of dairy cows.

AB - The paper presents the results of a research on the impact of products based on natural zeolite on the production results of fattening lambs. The experiment involved two groups of lambs (the control - C and experimental - E groups), each consisting of 15 heads, for a period of 90 days. The meal was made from sheep milk, feed mixtures for fattening lambs and meadow hay. The test group lambs, unlike the ones from the control group, were given mixtures based on natural zeolite. Min-a-Zel S mixture (in the form of 25% composite) was fed to lambs from birth till their 14th day of life, directly into the mouth, once a day (before the morning feed), in the amount of 10 ml. Min-a-Zel Plus was given to them from their 15th day of life, together with the feed mixture (0.5%). Feeding was at will. The average weight of lambs at the end of the experiment, in accordance with the sequence of treatments (C:E) was 24.40:26.94 kg (P (lt) 0.01). Daily weight gain of lambs, during the experiment, was 229:256 g and in the experimental group it was by 27g or 11.79% higher (P (lt) 0.01). The test group lambs had a better utilization of dry matter, protein and energy, which justifies the use of products based on natural zeolite in fattening lambs.

AB - Livestock production is an important branch of agriculture in the Republic of Serbia because it provides necessary products (milk, meat, eggs). In addition, livestock production provides raw materials for food industry and leather industry. Livestock production is expected to provide quality products for export, primarily beef and lamb. There is an opportunity for export of cheese (especially sheep and goat milk cheese) with defined origin and standard of quality. However, based on available data, the situation in livestock production is assessed as negative. In the last years, number of heads of all species of domestic animals has decreased continuously. In several years, Serbia will become member of European Union (EU). This means that livestock production should prepare for competition in the single developed market, without any state trade barriers. Serbia's membership in international organizations, liberalization of trade in livestock products, a small possibility of protection from imports, the implementation of quality standards (HACCP, ISO, Global GAP), reduced levels of domestic support, elimination of export subsidies, increase profitability and ability to be competitive on the international market. Based on these circumstances, it is necessary to build efficient livestock production that can compete in the European market contributing to the growth of farmers and national income.

AB - Efficiency of sheep production is conditioned by fertility. According to some authors number of offspring obtained per lambing is more important than gain of weight. Genetic relationships involving reproductive traits were seldom studied. Reproductive traits have low heritabilities, a discrete phenotypic expression, and are expressed only in sexually mature ewes leading to low selection intensities and long generation intervals. Documentation of realized selection response is also often complicated by the low heritabilities of fertility traits. Existence of a major gene affecting prolificacy had been suggested and at that time there were many sceptics who strongly doubted that a trait as complex as reproduction could be profoundly influenced by a single gene. Major genes affecting prolificacy in sheep was founded. A mutation in the bone morphogenetic protein 15 gene (BMP15, also known as GDF9B) responsible for high prolificacy in Inverdale sheep had been discovered and evidence of segregating major genes was being reported from flocks around the world. Development of gene mapping techniques, and locating alleles that are responsible for the fertility of sheep began a new chapter in predicting and controlling the fertility of sheep. The beneficial effects of nutrition on reproduction in sheep are well known. This procedure is known as flushing. The effect of Body Condition Score (BCS), before mating, during mating and after mating period, on reproductive efficiency of different breeds of sheep in the different rearing systems were studied. The farm manager has the ability to control or at least to manipulate the factors that have an impact on fertility.
