AB - The investigation was performed on two groups of primiparous and multiparous healthy dewormed Alpine dairy goats (25 each) during peripartal period. Blood samples were collected (jugular venipuncture) 10-15 days before and 10-15 and 30 days after the parturition into BD SST-II Advance (3.5 mL) and BD NaF 3.0 mg Na2EDTA 6.0 mg (2 mL) vacutainers, cooled and
centrifuged (1500 r/min, 15 minutes and ≤1300 r/min, 10 minutes, respectively). Glucose, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) concentrations in blood sera were determined using A15 automatic spectrophotometric analyzer (Biosystem, Spain). Simultaneously, body condition scoring (BCS) was performed by Villaquiran et al. (2007) method. The obtained data were analyzed by IBM SPSS statistics 21. The glucose concentration inclined to increase in both groups. Differences between glucose levels were significant (P<0.05) 15 days before and 15 days after, as well as 15 and 30 days after the parturition, and very significant (P<0.01) 15 days before and 30 days after the parturition. The BHBA blood levels significantly differed 15 days before and 30 days after and 15 and 30 days after the parturition (P<0.05). BHBA concentration peaked at week 2 postpartum, following the increase of NEFA, providing the substrate for BHBA synthesis. NEFA levels significantly (P<0.05) differed 15 days before and 15 days after the parturition. Goats’ BCS ranged from 2 to 4 and significantly depended on glucose (r=0.392; P<0.05) and BHBA (r=0.317; P<0.05) level 15 days before parturition. BCS 30 days postpartum very significantly depended on the glucose level (r=0.450; P<0.01), significantly higher than the concentration of BHBA (r=0.351; P<0.05) and NEFA concentration (r=-0.304; P<0.05). BCS 15 days before parturition did not depend on the NEFA concentration. Fifteen days after the parturition BCS did not statistically depend on the observed indicators. Obtained data suggest that knowledge of BCS and energy indicators levels may be very useful in research and practice in order to appreciate energy metabolism of pregnant and lactating dairy ruminants, particularly dairy goats. These data are poorly documented for goats, but they can reveal early pathological metabolic changes in transiting female goat organism, enabling successful prophylactic, as well as, therapeutic intervention.

AB - The objective of this research paper was to estimate heritability coefficients (heritability) of growth traits in the lambs of indigenous Sjenicka Pramenka breed. The research was conducted on a sample which included 421 lambs the descendants of 15 sires and 187 sheep-dams, raised on 3 private farms in Kolubarski district, Serbia. The effect of fixed factors was studied while the values of heritability coefficients were estimated within the frame of SAS software package. A statistically highly significant (**=P<0.01) effect on studied traits had following parameters: sex, year of lambing, type of lambing, farm and method of applied reproductive technology. By means of REML method and using the sire model the values of heritability coefficients were determined for the following traits: average lamb birth weight (BW0), average lamb body weight at 30 days (BW30) and average lamb body weight at 90 days (BW90) being: 0.0355; 0.4642 and 0.3018, respectively.

AB - The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of farm conditions and season of birth on body mass, respiratory system
diseases and diarrhea occurrence, and mortality during the first month of calves’ life. The study was conducted on two tie-stall–system
farms with intensive milk production and similar nutrition of dairy cows, but with differences in rearing conditions of calves in the first
week of life. The calves were tied on lying area with straw as bedding material (farm A) or free in individual boxes with straw bedding
(farm B). In the first consumption, they take 1–2 L of colostrum produced by their mother or by another cow (farm A), or 2.5–3 L of
colostrum produced by their mother or by another cow or frozen colostrum (farm B). According to the results, average body mass of
calves was significantly higher on farm B than of those on farm A at all ages (on birth, at 8 days, and 30 days). Mortality rate and diarrhea
occurrence in calves were higher on farm B, while respiratory system diseases incidence was higher on farm A. All observed welfare
indicators were very significantly (P < 0.01) influenced by farm conditions and birth season

AB - Field experiences and scientific observations point out the need
to define a guide which would describe widely applicable general principles and
good practices for ensuring the welfare of dairy cattle. The key action areas in the
guide should be stockmanship, feed and water, living environment, husbandry
practices and health management. There is a set of principles in each of these key
action areas that should be used to further define the good practice of ensuring
dairy cattle welfare in farms. The most important issue for the implementation of
good welfare practices for dairy cows is stockmanship. Appropriate nutrition is a
basic requirement and it is considered to have a great role to ensure good dairy
cattle welfare. Environment, space, equipment, microclimatic and hygienic
conditions significantly influence the welfare of dairy cattle. Dairy cattle should be
treated with care and in a consistent manner, taking into account their natural
behaviour all the time, and in any case minimizing the risk of injury and distress.
For the welfare of dairy cattle of particular importance are many health conditions
as: lameness, mastitis, injuries, acidosis, milk fever and other metabolic diseases,
diarrhoea and anaemia of calves, respiratory diseases, heat stress, arthritis and
many contagious diseases. It is necessary to introduce systematic training of
stockpersons in our country with special attention to stockmanship and
responsibility, feed and water, living environment, husbandry practices and health
management in order to achieve a stable system of ensuring good dairy cattle
welfare.

AB - In this review paper, contradictions in modern livestock production
as dilemmas of farm animal welfare are considered. The main dilemma concerns
the question of whether extensive production in small farms is generally better than
intensive production in large farms. The next dilemma relates to an intensive
selection of animals and its impact on the emergence of welfare problems. Another
dilemma is related to the two main interconnected problems of pig welfare in
individual farrowing pens: the piglet death by crushing and the sows’ movement
restriction. Similarly, welfare dilemma is the paradox of parent flocks of broiler
line breeding that could not be solved until the pressure for genetic advancement in
production is required due to the economic efficiency. The next example of the
dilemma is the widespread practice of tail docking in piglets in order to reduce the
risk of tail biting. Although the tail docking is painful and may cause death,
anesthesia is usually not applied on farms. A similar example of the dilemma is
debeaking in the laying hens and the occurrence of feather pecking in free rearing
systems. It is important to notice the difference between the described dilemmas,
where one premise opposes the other, which is essentially a conflict between the
animal welfare goals and other values, such as economic, ethical and moral issues.
Finally, there are also some dilemmas about the consumers’ willingness to pay a
higher price of products that originate from welfare friendly rearing conditions.

twinning was 6.19 and 3.78% for conventional and 7.54 and 1.13% for sexed semen, respectively.
The use of conventional semen exerted no statistically significant (P>0.05) effect on female: male
calves relationship (51.96 : 48.04) while artificial insemination by sexed semen highly significantly
(P<0.01) changed calf sex-ratio (85.10 : 14.90). First-calf heifers originating from sires whose sperm
was obtained in conventional way produced 7880 kg milk with 269 kg milk fat and 242 kg protein in
standard lactation, while first-calf heifers originating from sires whose sperm was sex-sorted
produced 8184 kg milk with 251 kg milk fat and 242.3 kg protein. Type of insemination (conventional
and sexed semen) did not significantly affect the studied milk yield traits (P>0.05).

AB - This research was conducted with the aim оf estimating genetic trend for a functional length of productive life (FLPL) in the population of Black and White cattle in Serbia. Research and bulls genetic evaluation for functional longevity were performed on a set of data provided by Agricultural Corporation Belgrade AD (PKB) which contained data on longevity and origin of 22109 cows out of which 26% records were right-censored. Functional length of productive life (FPLP) represents a time period from the first calving to culling or censoring corrected for milk production. Breeding values were estimated using Weibull method of proportional risks within survival analysis a genetic trend for FLPL was calculated using of a regression analysis. The cows included in the analysis were on average first calved in the age of 809 days and had an average share of 81.9% genes of Holstein Friesian breed. An average length of productive life was 1267 days (41.6 months). Distribution of bull standardised breeding values did not statistically significantly differ from normal distribution. An average standardised breeding value was 99. A slightly positive genetic trend was determined, that is, the length of functional productive life was by selection increased by 0.021 day at an annual level while a reliability of estimated breeding values showed a negative trend.

AB - The conducted research was aimed at constructing equations of selection index that would be used in the selection of the Holstein-Friesian breed animals in Serbia. The construction of the selection index includes the most important milk traits observed in standard lactation: milk yield (MY305), milk fat content (% MF305) and protein content (% MP305). The variance and covariance necessary for the construction of selection index are calculated using the mixed model by the method of least squares. The economic value of traits is expressed as a ratio of relative changes in costs per unit of traits included in the selection index. Livestock included in the research produced, in the first standard lactation, an average of 7681 kg of milk with 3.58% milk fat and 3.28% protein. The equation of the selection index presented in the paper is selected from the group of equations of selection index, as an equation with the highest correlation between the equation and the aggregate genotype, which amounted to 0.2156.

AB - This research paper gives an analysis on the size of world's domestic buffalo populations, their milk production and the size of buffalo population in Serbia. Population of domestic buffalo in the world is constantly increasing so that in 2013 there were 199 783 549 individuals, out of which in India in the same year they raised 57.77% of buffalo world population, in Pakistan 18.87%, and in China 11.64%. The share of total world production of buffalo milk in total world milk production in 2012 was 12.92 % or 97 417 135 t out of which 67.76% was produced in India. In Serbia buffalo is raised in the regions of Raška (about 1000 individuals) and Kosovo. Populations of buffalo in central Serbia show a tendency of decreasing in size what was the reason to start a programme of in situ conservation 10 years ago. On the sample of buffalo population encompassed by the programme of conservation the body measures were analysed indicating that the population of buffalo is quite unequalised and that average values obtained for exterior measures are similar to the results obtained by the authors of earlier period for the population of buffalo in the area of former Yugoslavia.

AB - The effect of systematic and continuous environmental factors on milk performance traits over standard lactations in 2805 Simmental cows was evaluated using the general linear model. The systematic factors included the effect of farm or breeding area, calving season, year of birth, season of birth, lactation group and their interactions. The continuous factor analysed was the effect of age at first conception. The effect of farm, lactation group and calving season on standard lactation milk performance was found to be highly significant (P (lt) 0.01), excepting the effect of calving season on milk fat percent in standard lactations which showed statistical significance (P (lt) 0.05). The interactions between year and season of birth, farm and calving season, and farm and lactation group had a highly significant effect (P (lt) 0.01) on all performance traits studied. Age at first conception, as a continuous factor, had a highly significant effect (P (lt) 0.01) on milk yield and milk fat percent, and a non-significant effect on milk fat yield. The model used to correct the performance traits over standard lactations for the effect of systematic factors was highly significant (P (lt) 0.01). The variance of the model accounted for 20.06 and 37.31% of the total variance of milk fat yield and milk fat percent, respectively. The resulting coefficients of determination (R-2) ranged from 0.20 for milk fat yield to 0.37 for milk fat percent.

abstract = "The effect of systematic and continuous environmental factors on milk performance traits over standard lactations in 2805 Simmental cows was evaluated using the general linear model. The resulting coefficients of determination (R-2) ranged from 0.20 for milk fat yield to 0.37 for milk fat percent.",

AB - Three farms of dairy cows (A, B and C) were observed for health disorders of dairy cows and suckling calves. Farm A is farm with tied system of rearing, with 1100 cows, while farms B and C have 400 and 600 cows kept loose with outdoor pens, respectively. Data regarding welfare criteria of dairy cows (health, feeding, housing and behaviour) were collected and analysed through Protocol of Welfare Quality (2009). Health disorders of dairy cows and suckling calves were collected and statistically analysed by chi-square test (X2 test). Welfare of all of three dairy farms were assessed as acceptable, meaning that provided welfare conditions meet the minimum requirements of animals. Principle of provision of good health was rated as acceptable (≥20 points) on farm A, while on farms with loose system (B and C) overall health rated as excellent (≥80 points). Occurrence rate of reproductive, locomotor, skin and claws disorders and digestive and systemic disorders of dairy cows and calves up to 4 months old were very different between three farms (A, B, C) with X2-values of 2901.71, 252.02, 204.08, 1152.31 and 184.23 respectively; α (lt) 0.01). According presented data, it is obvious that the majority health problems were observed in tied system of rearing, on farm A, such as reproductive disorders and mastitis, as well as injuries and bad body score and lame cows. The most serious health problems of the calves were diarrhea and bronchopneumonia of different etiology.
AB - Tri farme muznih krava (A, B i C) su analizirane u pogledu zdravstvenih poremećaja i dobrobiti krava i teladi.

AB - This study was conducted in five dairy farms with different capacity (farms A with 47, B 12, C 10, D 14 and E 24 Simmental cows, aged between 4 and 5 years and body weight about 600 kg) in order to determine a relationship between rearing system, Animal Needs Index (ANI) and milk traits. Loose system of cow rearing was used in open stalls in farms A and C, while in other farms cows were tied in closed stalls. In two farms, there were outdoor pens, permanently available to cows on farm A, and during daytime on farm D. Rations for dairy cows were equal in all five farms and suitable for daily milk production about 20 kg with 4.0 % milk fat and 3.5 % milk protein. It was established that total ANI scores for farms were A 35.5, B 9.5, C 24.5, D 26.5 and E 10.5. The welfare levels in farms B and E were not sufficient, in farms C and D were very good, while in farm A it was excellent. A very significant influence of rearing system on cow welfare was found (p (lt) 0.001). A significant influence of rearing system (p (lt) 0.01) on average daily milk yield, milk yield in standard lactation, milk fat (kg), yield of 4 % fat corrected milk and yield of proteins (kg) were noticed. The influence of the rearing system on milk fat content (%), dry matter (%), protein (%) and lactose (%) was not statistically significant. Differences between ANI score, daily and standard lactation milk yield were very significant (p (lt) 0.001), as well as differences between ANI and the amount of milk fat (kg), protein (kg) and amount of 4 % fat corrected milk.

AB - In order to have a more precise description of dairy farm structure and characteristics of dairy production systems, as well as to assess possibilities for improving production and farming conditions in which milk production is organized, a survey based research was directed at a select group of farms across the Serbia. 1180 questionnaires have been mailed to farmers whose farms are registered for either cattle or mixed production. Questionnaire was divided into 6 sections: general information of the farm, agricultural and structural information, zootechnical information, sanitary and veterinarian information, information about education and extension, and information on the perspectives of future farming. About 59% of analyzed farms have size up to 20 ha, with average size of about 10 ha. On the other hand, about 55% farms raises up to 15 cows and heifers with average of 6 heads per farm, while 3% of farms have more than 200 cows and heifers. Over 86% of surveyed farmers intend to expand existing farm production, mainly by increasing the number of animals, stricter selection and improvement of the conditions for feeding, housing, care and milking. About 75% of farmers have expressed a positive expectation from future membership of Serbia in EU, although these expectations are not clearly defined.

AB - The effect of interaction between the farm and calving season, as well as the farm and group of lactations on milk performance traits (milk yield, yield of milk fat, 4% fat corrected milk and milk fat content) was analyzed on sample of 2805 Simmental cows with total 9718 standard lactations, housed on dairy farm 'Zlatiborski suvati' on Zlatibor (578 cows and 1968 lactations), dairy farm of the Agricultural holding Dobričevo in Ćuprija (964 cows and 3237 lactations) and dairy animals housed on family farms/households in the region of Kotraža (1263 cows and 4513 lactations). The significance of the effect of interaction between the farm and calving season, as well as interaction between the farm and group of lactations on all milk performance traits was very high (P (lt) 0.001), which justified their inclusion into models for assessment of the breeding value of dairy cows. The share of variance of interactions in total variance of milk performance traits in standard lactations was low (below and around 4%), which clearly indicated even more systematic factors and their interactions which influence the total variability of observed traits of milk performance of cows in standard lactations.

AB - In this paper are described the most important stressors in intensive sheep production on farms and pastures. Stressors on farms and pastures mostly originate from adverse housing conditions, improper zootechnical procedures, veterinary procedures (treatment, vaccinations, blood tests, surgery), animal husbandry procedures (labeling, weaning, grouping, shearing, shortening the tail, hoof care), unsuitable weather conditions (extreme heat and cold) and insufficient nutrition. The paper puts out special emphasis on the consideration of period of life in which sheep were subjected to additional loads and susceptible to effects of these stressors, such as birth, juvenile period, puberty, oestrus, advanced pregnancy, parturition and the puerperal period.
Stresori na farmama i pašnjacima najčešće potiču od nepovoljnih uslova smeštaja i držanja, nepravilnih postupaka odgajivača, veterinarskih postupaka (lečenja, vakcinacije, vađenja krvi, hirurške intervencije), zootehničkih postupaka (obeležavanje, odbijanje, grupisanje, šišanje, skraćivanje repa, obrada papaka), neodgovarajućih klimatskih uslova (ekstremna toplota i hladnoća) i neodgovarajuće ishrane.

AB - The most significant welfare problems in dairy calves in intensive rearing conditions have been investigated in this paper. These problems mainly result from inadequate intake of colostrum (separation from the dam), inadequate ventilation (resulting in inappropriate airflow, low or high temperatures, high humidity and poor air quality), poor floor conditions (wet floor, without bedding), inadequate monitoring of health, exposure to pathogens causing respiratory and gastrointestinal disorders and occurrence of iron deficiency. In addition, on cattle farms in our country welfare problems in calves originate from continuous restocking (no 'all in - all out') and mixing calves from different sources, as well as insufficiently balanced solid food, insufficient access to water and generally poor response of farmer to health problems, especially necessary dietary changes. A special welfare problem is insufficient floor space allowance which results in calf's discomfort.

AB - In this paper, welfare assessment using the methodology of the Welfare quality ® assessment protocol for cattle (2009) was performed for dairy cows maintained in the loose system of rearing on three dairy farms. This methodology includes quantitative measurements and qualitative evaluation of certain welfare parameters, criteria and principles of welfare, as well as assessment of the overall welfare of dairy cows. The results showed that the overall level of dairy cow welfare was acceptable on two farms, and was good on one. On two farms, the state of the cows' social behavior expression was unacceptable. Furthermore, on all three farms, the expression of other types of cow behavior was not acceptable. At one farm, it was determined that the result for the absence of prolonged thirst was unacceptable. Based on these results, it can be concluded that it is necessary to improve the quality of cow welfare on these farms. The applied methodology provides a multidimensional insight into the quality of cow welfare in the loose system.

AB - The effects of general and special biosecurity measures to prevent introduction of infectious agents in a dairy farm or its spreading from farm were analyzed in details in this paper. Investigations were conducted on five different dairy farm production with different technology and capacity using a questionnaire method (Hristov and Stanković, 2009), as well as scrutinizing their positions in relation to possible sources bio-risks from the near and far away environment. Test results showed that there are serious shortcomings on all observed farms, regarding the possibility of introduction of infectious agents in the production herd, and its possible spread to the environment. Although all fenced and a position of the most of the farms mostly favourable, there are some serious threats to the herd health and farm production, regarding open space and lack of green belt, the uncontrolled presence of wild birds and rodents in facilities and even in feed storage, as well as contact of the employees with other cows not belonging to the farm.

abstract = "The effects of general and special biosecurity measures to prevent introduction of infectious agents in a dairy farm or its spreading from farm were analyzed in details in this paper. Although all fenced and a position of the most of the farms mostly favourable, there are some serious threats to the herd health and farm production, regarding open space and lack of green belt, the uncontrolled presence of wild birds and rodents in facilities and even in feed storage, as well as contact of the employees with other cows not belonging to the farm., U radu su detaljno analizirani efekti preduzetih opštih i posebnih mera biosigurnosti koji se odnose na sprečavanje unošenja infektivnog materijala u farmu muznih krava ili njegovog širenja sa farme.

AB - The relationship between milk production traits over whole lactations was evaluated across three generations of Simmental cows, i.e. between daughters, dams and grand dams, by a phenotypic regression analysis with whole lactation traits in the daughter generation being used as the dependent variables (x1), and those in the dam and grand dam generations being used as the independent variables (x2 and x3). The results were obtained from a sample of 1170 daughters and as many dams and grand dams. The significance of the partial regression coefficients b2 and b3 was separately evaluated by a t-test. An analysis of variance was used to estimate the significance of the simultaneous effect of the production traits of dams and grand dams on the milk production achieved in the daughter generation. The calculated value of the partial regression coefficients for the whole lactation production traits across three generations (grand dams, dams and daughters) and their statistical significances determined by the t and F tests, as well as the regression equations used, suggested that the effect of the grand dam generation on the milk production traits in granddaughters was substantially lower than the effect of dams. The calculated partial regression coefficients (b2 and b3) were positive and statistically very significant (P (lt) 0.01), excepting the regression coefficients b3 for lactation length and b2 for milk fat content that were not statistically significant (P>0.05). A very significant change (P (lt) 0.01) was observed in all production traits in the daughter generation as simultaneously affected by the traits in the dam and grand dam generations.
