AB - The aim of this study was to determine the influence of sow genotype, year of farrowing and parity on the number of live-born piglets. Fertility traits of sows were tested during fourteen years (from 2007 to 2020) in one pig herd/population. The study included 10159 sows, 4 genotypes: Landrace, large White, Landrace x large White and large White Yorkshire x Landrace. The sow fertility data set contained data on 36189 parities. Based on the obtained results, it was determined that the genotype of sows, year of farrowing and parity had a statistically highly significant (P <0.01) influence on the number of live - born piglets.

AB - The paper examines the results of the research on the
coccidiosis in lambs in Vojvodiina. The present study was conducted in 90
sheep flocks from the all territory of Vojvodina in the period from March 2014
to January 2015. Sheep of both sexes (320 males and 580 females, for a total
of 900) were randomly chosen. There were 610 adults (one-year-old and
above) and 290 lambs. Colected faeces samples were examined using routine
coprological methods. During our examination coccidiosis were found at
32.22% (29/90) flocks. We usally occured mixed infection with 2-3 coccidia
species. At sheep most abundant species were E.ovinoidalis found at 87.1%,
followed by E faurei (42%), Eimeria ahsata (37%), E. granulosa (31%), E.
intricata (19%), and E. pallida (8%). Oocyst were found at adult ant young
animals, but clinical sign of disease were present only at young animals. The
number of excreted oocysts was higher in lambs than in adult sheep.

AB - The study of the link between genes controlling protein polymorphism and milk
performance traits of domestic animals has great economic importance from a
selection point of view, as it reduces the generation interval, leading to increased
productivity in livestock. The objective of this paper was to establish the influence
of genetic β -lactoglobulin polymorphism on the quantity and quality of milk of the
simmental breed in Serbiа. For the research blood samples were taken from a total of
157 Simmental cows. The genotypes of Simmental cows for β-lactoblobulin and
their effect on quantitative milk performance traits were determined using the PCRRFLP analysis. The variability of traits influenced by the genetic polymorphism of
β-lactoblobulin was statistically very highly significant (p <0.0001) for milk yield in
standard lactation and milk fat and protein yields, while it showed no statistically
significant variability (p> 0.05) for content of milk fat and protein. The AB genotype
cows achieved a 121 kg and 338 kg increase in milk production compared to the BB
genotype and AA genotype cows, respectively.

AB - Corn starch is the most important food ingredient, but also the main energy source for poultry. In corn grain 98% of starch comes from endosperm. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of vitreous (resistant) maize starch in broilers feeding on: basic product indicators, chemical composition of meat, and skin and meat colour. The study was conducted by a single-factor experiment with a total of four dietary treatments on the Ross 308 heavy hybrid broiler chickens, on 480 chickens overall, divided into four groups, three experimental and one control. The chickens of the control group were fed with 100% corncobs, while the experimental groups had the share of corncobots replaced by fractions of vitreous maize starch in the ratio of 25%, 50% and 75%. In this study, a positive effect on chickens for experimental treatment was related to the follow- ing factors: daily intake (at the end of the experiment), increased food consumption over four weeks, food conversion in the first part of the experiment, the value of b* index of skin and white meat.

AB - In pasture breed condition helminth infection are common especially during late spring and autumn months. Research of goats and sheep parasites was made systematically last 10 years in Serbia. Most of the research related to gastrointestinal and something less about lung helminth infection. The research was carried out on several location in Serbia in the period and included goat and sheep herds in the area of carried out in north, northeast, eastern, southern and south-eastern part of Serbia and at Belgrade area. We examined fecal samples using the Berman method. Slaughtered or dead animals we examined by necropsy and adult parasites separated from the lung section. Determination of adult and larval stage of parasites was based on morphological characteristics. During our examination most abundant species was Dictyocaulus filaria, followed by Protostrongylus rufescens, Cystocaulus nigrescens and Muellerius capillaris.

AB - Demodicosis of sheep are parasitic infection caused by Demodex spp. Infection is not common like other type of
parasitic dermatitis and there are not many cases of this infection described. In most cases no clinical symptoms are
cusing and has little or no economic impact on sheep flocks. Demodex spend all life under host skin and present a
normal skin habitat. Mainly are resent at hair folicules where its complete transformation from eggs to adult is
performed. There are two types of diseases, local and general. Local demodicosis were present like small reddish
places without hair on skin. Main topic are skin on head, around eyes and mouth, and on the back legs. Most important
role to clinical demodicosis presents a immunological status of animals. Hereditary against demodicosis were
important role too. During our examination of parasitoses in one flock of sheep in the south of Serbia during the spring
of 2018, demodicosis was diagnosed. Established clinical signs are nonpruritic papules and nodules which develop
over the face, neck, shoulders, and sides and udder. At a later stage, there was a pustular eruption that gradually
merged, while later there was a thickening of the skin and loss of wool. Itch rarely occurred. The nodules contain a
thick, waxy, grayish material that can be easily expressed and mites can be found in this exudate. To diagnosis we
performed microscopic examination of deep skin scrape which revealed adult parasites, larval forms and lemon-shaped
eggs. Lesion were spontaneous loos around few months without therapy. In the area of the Western Balkans, only one
case of ovine demodicosis was recorded in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and this is the first case described in Serbia.

AB - Cryptosporidiosis is an anthropozoonosis caused by coccidia of the family Cryptoporididae, which may
cause a serious health problem for kids in the first weeks of life. In our paper we presented results of
examination of goat cryptosporidiosis in Serbia. In period 2016-2019 we examined 197 goat herds.
Total of 1576 faecal smears were examined by Sheather’s sugar floatation technique and modified
Ziehl–Neelsen staining technique. Cryptosporidiosis were found at 119 herds. Kids between five and
twenty-one days old are the most susceptible. The morbidity varies from 75–100% and the mortality
from 45-50%. Some animals do not develop into chronic cases and become carriers. After infection,
animals either resist the organism, develop a mild infection that is self-limiting, or soon sicken and die.
Based on the performed research, we have established a significant role of cryptosporidiosis in the
development of neonatal enteropathies of kids

AB - The purpose of this study was to determine status, number and present level of productivity of autochthonous goats raised in Central Serbia on smallholder farms. Study included quality breeding animals of Balkan and Serbian white goat breed registered in Central herd book. Productivity data were collected from regular annual performance recordings at 11 smallholder farms for 145 Balkan does (2-9 years of age) and 203 kids and 83 Serbian white does (2-10 years of age) and 109 kids. Traits recorded were as follows: body weight of does, body weight of kids at birth, at the age of 30 days and at weaning, prolificacy of does and milk production. The analysis showed the average body weight of does to be 43.07 kg for Balkan does and 47.42 kg for Serbian white does. Average body weight of kids at birth, 30 days of age and weaning was 2.22 kg, 6.87 kg and 15.71 kg, respectively for Balkan breed and 3.66 kg, 7.24 kg and 14.23 kg for Serbian white breed. Prolificacy was 140% in Balkan and 131% in Serbian white does. Among dairy production traits, following results were obtained for Balkan and Serbian white goat respectively: lactation length 199 and 229 days, total milk yield 257.89 kg and 459.49 kg, milk fat content 4.03% and 3.79%, milk protein content 3.06% and 3.35%. Number of quality breeding animals registered at Central herd book in 2018, as presented in Institute for Animal Husbandry’s annual report for goats for Central Serbia in 2018, was 159 for Balkan and 138 for Serbian white goat. As these breeds represent a valuable and irreplaceable source of genetic variability, as well as very important cultural and traditional heritage and further emphasis should be on preserving and increasing their number.

AB - Crossbreeding serves as a predictable and cost-effective method
to genetically increase lamb body weight by mating two or more breeds of sheep.
The crossing over breed comes to a far greater number of combinations of genes
and thus is more likely to express favorable allele carriers of economically
important traits. The phenomenon of heterosis has used since the beginning of the
last century. However, its genetic basis has remained unclear. From the very
beginning of the knowledge of heterosis to the present day, there are several
theories, but neither theory able to answer all questions that arise regarding the
apparent strength of the F1 generation offspring. Not assert anything about the
genetic or molecular phenomenon that causes heterosis. It has been increasingly
experimentally confirmed that heterosis is the result of highly complex interactions
within the genome as well as between the genome and the environment. In Serbia,
some activity of domestic researchers regarding crossbreeding of sheep after the
Second World War has been recorded up to date. It found out that crosses have a
higher body weight than the maternal base in the F1 generation. In other words,
they had better fattening capacity than purebreds. However, the results are not
always in line with expectations due to the influence of various known and
unknown factors. This review paper aims to draw attention to the phenomenon of
heterosis through experience in its application in Serbia, in the hope that this
biological phenomenon would clarify in the near future by applying modern
scientific understandings and technologies.

AB - Due to actual global concerns for farm animal welfare and an also prominent
issue of climate change effect, this study was conducted in order to examine the expression
of dairy cows’ health parameters in two main seasons (winter and summer). Thirteen
health parameters classified into two main groups, injuries and diseases, were selected and
analysed according to their relevance for welfare provision by Welfare Quality®
Assessment Protocol for Dairy Cows (2009). According to the final calculation score (0100

points) parameters were descriptively categorized as unacceptable, acceptable,
enhanced or excellent in terms of welfare provision. Data were collected through clinical
scoring and veterinary reports available on a total of 16 dairy farms (N=4.833 cows). The
temperature ranges for winter and summer season in a given year were -4.2 to 7.2˚C and
19.3 to 27.4 ˚C respectively. Obtained welfare scores for injuries (41/100 points) and
diseases (59/100 points) showed that cows in both seasons were more prone to injuries
than to diseases. Estimated welfare condition for injuries was categorized as acceptable,
and for diseases as enhanced, indicating no severe risk for welfare was determined. No
significant differences for examined parameters were found between seasons with
exception of somewhat higher lameness frequency in the winter season (39% vs. 32%).
Frequencies of diseases were, in majority below alarm thresholds except for mastitis
(2.6%) and conjunctivitis (6.0%) in the summer season.

Fertility index was 1.17 and average wool production was 2.88 kg. Average lactation after weaning lasted for 100 days, with milk production 65.16 kg, 3.91% protein and 6.72% milk fat. Krivovir strain is participating with 0.4% of total number of controlled sheep in central Serbia. Although in small number, this strain is irreplaceable in sustainable systems because they are evolutionary adapted to the conditions in which they are reared and because of their contribution to gene pool and agro-biodiversity.

AB - The aim was to examine the effect of premating age, premating weight of ewes Mis sheep breed on lamb’s birth weight, birth type, gender and the interaction between subject effects. 70 ewes of Mis breed of sheep and their F1 generation lambs produced (Mis x Ile de France) were used in the evaluation. Data concerning the ewes premating age (PMA), premating weight of ewes (PMW), lambs birth weight (LBW), type of birth of lambs (BT), gender of lambs were collected from 122 lambs born. The ewes PMA7 had the heaviest lambs with an average birth weight of 4.72 kg and the lightest was 4.18 kg from ewes PMA5. Some of the extreme values of body weight of mother corresponded to lambs with less weight. The premating weight of Mis sheep mothers with 61 kg was optimal in this regard. The order of birth weight of lambs corresponded with the type of birth of such; the single born lambs had the heaviest birth weight (5.61kg) while the triplets had the lightest birth weight (3.65 kg). According to the number of lambs, born the twin lambs have the highest percentage with 55.74% whereas an equal percentage acquired both for single and triplets with 22.13%. PMA, PMW, BT and the interaction effect between PMA*PMW significantly influence lambs birth weight (LBW). However, the Gender of lambs and the interaction effect between PMA*Gender, PMW*Gender, PMA*BT, PMW*BT found no influence on lambs birth weight (LBW).

AB - The high price of protein nutrients as well as import orientation
have triggered the demand for alternative protein sources in the feeding of lambs.
In addition, it is necessary to take into account the degree of degradability of
proteins. In order to ensure optimal amino acid pool for high genetic capacity of
lamb growth, it is important to provide a protein fraction that avoids degradation in
the rumen. An excellent source of protein that slowly degrades in the rumen is fish
meal. However, given the recommendation of its non-use, the effects of the use of
Eko fish meal, as a fishmeal substitute in diet of lambs of average body weight of
about 14 kg and age of 30 days, were examined. The source of protein did not
significantly affect the growth rate and the efficiency of food utilization in the
lambs of MIS population in fattening (P>0.05), suggesting that fish meal can be
successfully replaced by Eco Fish Meal. As an alternative to soybeans, in diet for
lambs in fattening, the following were used: sunflower meal with the addition of
fibrolithic enzyme, lupine, fodder peas, fodder beans were used, while in the more
exotic areas the following were used: castor cake, pomegranate peel, product
obtained after rice fermentation without any harmful effect on the biological
efficiency of growth and food conversion.

of birth, sex, birth type from progeny (F1 generation) of crossing Mis x Ile de
France with a total of 388 lambs born during 2018 to 2019 recorded. The General
Linear Model (GLM) procedure was used to analyze the data. The analysis of
variance has shown that month of birth significantly affects lambs birth weight
(P<.005). Results shows a highly significant effect of year on lambs birth weight
(P<.001). The highest mean average birth weight of lambs showed on the second
year. Regarding of season, lambs had the highest body weight in spring and
winter, and the smallest in autumn but despite the differences in weight, season did
not show any significant effect on lambs birth weight (P>.005). Sex of lambs
showed no significant effect on lambs birth weight (P>.005). The birth type
significantly affects birth weight of lambs (P<.001). The highest body weight are

Observed data were processed using the statistical package Statistica for Windows (Stat. Soft Inc.), whereby the basic parameters of descriptive statistics (arithmetic mean, variation coefficient, standard deviation and standard error) were calculated. In this study, total of 840 adult animals were observed. Average observed body weight (BW) of lambs were: BW on birth 3.56 kg, BW after 30 days 12.72 kg and BW on weaning 27.14 kg, while BW of adult sheep was 66.18 kg. Fertility index was 1.31 and average wool production was 3.24 kg. Average lactation lasted for 125 days, with milk production of 102.16 kg, 5.74% protein and 7.12% milk fat. Indigenous breeds are irreplaceable in sustainable systems because they are evolutionary adapted to the conditions in which they are reared. Lipa strain is one of them and due to it’s productions in humble conditions it is one of the key for sustainable sheep production.

AB - Central Serbia has a long tradition of cattle farming and, as a
hilly-mountainous area it favors rearing of dual purpose Simmental breed, and to a
lesser extent, Holstein-Friesian dairy breed. The first Herd Book of Serbia was
founded in 1935. The high quality breeding animals registered are under the
control of production performance properties. According to expert report of the
Institute for Animal Husbandry and the results of the implementation of the
breeding program in 2018 in the territory of Central Serbia, there were a total of
153.979 quality breeding animals of Simmental and 16509 quality breeding
animals of Holstein-Friesian breed in the main herd. Both breeds are of national
interest and are included in the breeding-selection program for dairy cattle that are
implemented through the cooperation of breeders and breeding organizations in the
field. In Central Serbia, there are 157 registered breeding organizations involved in
breeding and livestock recording activities. In this paper, data of the Head breeding
organization in cattle farming, the Institute for Animal Husbandry, as well as
reports issued by the same entity each year were used. A tabular analysis and a
five-year trend are presented according to: the number of recorded animals,
primiparous females in linear evaluation, the realized yield of milk, milk fat and
protein, as well as the trend of the number of bull dams in the population. Based on
the analysis of the results of work on cattle breeding and selection, it can be
concluded that some progress has been made in milk production of both breeds. It
is important to emphasize that there is a significant effect of mentioned factors on
the productivity of entire cattle population in Central Serbia. Systematic work on
the breeding and selection of cattle is an important work that should be carried out
in high quality, continuously and appropriately in order to achieve maximum
effects in cattle production.

AB - The main goal of this research was to examine, using modern
methods, the variability of phenotypic correlations of production performances and
reproductive properties of Simmental cows reared on the farms of individual
agricultural producers, in different breeding areas of the Republic of Serbia. The
study of phenotypic correlations of milk performance and fertility properties in
different regions of Serbia was carried out on a total of 3.056 primi parous
Simmental heifers under control, with lactations completed within one year. The
examined animals were reared on different individual farms, and mainly in very
different conditions of housing and nutrition, depending on the breeding area. The
study of phenotypic correlations included the following milk performance traits:
milk yield, milk fat content, milk fat yield, yield of 4% corrected milk; and fertility
properties: age at first calving and service period.
The results of the study among other things indicate that although the
phenotypic correlations between the fertility and milk performance properties show
different degrees of variation, they should be taken into account in the final
assessment of the breeding value of the animal, so that the breeding selection
programs are more comprehensively designes.

AB - The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of the κ-casein and β-lactoglobulin genotypes of the daughters of 5 Simmental bulls (sires) used for insemination in Serbia. Blood samples were taken from a total of 157 cows of the Simmental breed in Toplica and Rasina districts. Cows from which blood samples were taken were the daughters of the following bulls: Rorb B033, Dionis B52, Val B064, Rondi B029 and Res 1433. In all daughters of studied bulls, the presence of all three genotypes was determined, except for daughters of bull sire Res B1433, where the absence of genotype BB was determined. In addition to determining the frequency of genotypes and alleles for both milk protein fractions, based on the χ2 test, a link between the sire and the presence of genotypes was determined, and in both cases a statistically significant relationship (p≤0.001) was found.

AB - Forage grass-legume mixture are highly productive ambience of
different plant species intended for animal nutrition. The competitiveness of
species in the mixtures is one of the important traits that significantly affect
grassland management. The goal of the study was to evaluate nitrogen nutrition
index of pure lucerne and their mixtures with grasses and sainfoin subjected to four
different levels of nitrogen in three years duration. The experiment had a
randomised block design with four replicates and eight treatments. Examined
treatments were pure lucerne crop and mixtures of lucerne, orchard grass, tall
fescue and sainfoin in the same proportion and four nitrogen fertilization rates (0,
70, 140, 210 kg ha-1). Pure lucerne achieved higher yield by 12.8% than their
mixtures. Forage production was the highest at 210 kgN ha-1 which was 14.6%
more than treatments without nitrogen. Nitrogen uptake by the plant that were
fertilized with N was significantly higher than the plants that were not fertilized. In
all three experimental years control nitrogen treatment had satisfactory value of
nitrogen nutrition index while other N treatments showed luxury consumption. Soil
N reserves and nitrogen fixation in the treatment where N was not applied, were
sufficient to ensure enough biomass production.

AB - The aim of this research was to determine the production properties of red clover cultivated in monoculture and in mixtures with perennial ryegrass during two years with application of fertilizer in different rates of N. The experimental factors were two mixtures of perennial ryegrass and red clover arranged in different proportions of 70:30 (30CP), 50:50 (50CP) and monoculture of red clover (100CP). N was applied as ammonium nitrate (34% N) in three different levels: 0, 50 and 100 kg N ha-1. After each cut, the botanical composition was studied, the herbage production parameters and crude protein content were analysed. The share of red clover in the crop had a significant effect on all of the studied properties except for the leaf : stem ratio and leaf surface. Higher proportion of red clover increased yield, plant height, specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf area index (LAI). The height of red clover plants and LAI were higher in monoculture than in mixtures by 12% and 46%, respectively. The crude protein content was higher in mixtures than in pure crop by 8%. N fertilization reduced the yield of red clover, and increased other production parameters as well as the crude protein content.

AB - Modern society, over time, has accepted animals as sentient
beings. From the welfare point of view, the emotions are a reflection of the whole
permeation of the animal and its environment, which make them important and
reliable indicators. In fact, they are cross-linked with other welfare indicators such
as physiological and behavioural. Freedom of movement is crucial for the animals’
naturalness, especially in terms of their normal behaviour expression. Regarding
that, this study was conducted in order to investigate and compare the emotional
state of cows in a loose (LHS) and tied housing systems (THS). The assessment
was done according to Welfare Quality Protocol for Cattle (2009) on a total of 16
dairy farms (N=4,833 cows), seven with LHS and nine with THS. The emotional
state was assessed by a qualitative behavioural assessment (QBA), a method based
on the translation of “body language” into the numbers that can be statistically
analysed and interpreted. Twenty reliable descriptors were used, among which,
some were related to positive emotional state (e.g., active, relax, happy) and some
to negative state (e.g., agitated, nervous, distressed). Result showed that tendencies
toward positive descriptors were significantly higher (p ≤ 0.05) in LHS, followed
by lower expression of distress, frustration and apathy in animals. This resulted in
better estimation of overall emotional state in LHS indicating its advantage and
necessity of providing exercise in cows’ daily routine.
