AB - Giardia spp. are flagellates that are found in the intestinal tract of humans and
other mammals, birds and amphibians. Infections with giardia have been
reported widely in livestock and companion animals in different parts of the
world. Evidence of infection in humans and animals of Giardia duodenalis.
especially of assemblage A and B has firmly established giardiasis as a zoonotic
disease. At ruminants giardiasis usually result with diarrhea, especially in young
animals, which in turn adversely affect production resulting in economic loses.
So far, no research has been done related to giardiasis in small ruminat and cattle
in Serbia, and here we present the results of the first studies of the presence of
giardiasis in ruminants in our country.

AB - The strategy of conservation of endangered sheep populations
implies morphological and genetic characterization, as basic preconditions for their
conservation. The aim of this study was to determine the morphometric
characteristics, their correlations and the index of physical development of Pirot
pramenka, which has the status of the most endangered population in Serbia. The
measuring was performed on 30 sheep, aged 3 years, reared in the area of Stara
Planina. The descriptive statistical procedure was performed using the statistical
package Statistica (version 8). The average height at the withers was 56.31 cm,
body length 62.93 cm, chest width 18.37 cm, chest depth 25.96 cm, chest
circumference 77.59 cm, shin circumference 6.70 cm. The strongest and
significantly positive correlation (P <0.05) was found between chest depth and
height at withers (0.65), body length (0.58) and body weight (0.56). Pirotska
pramenka has slightly higher indices of format, chest and massiveness, in relation
to breeds Vitoroga Žuja and Travnik Pramenka. These morphometric traits suggest
that, compared to previous research, the body frame of Pirot pramenka sheep did
not change significantly, which means that there were no crosses with other breeds
due to geographical isolation and enthusiasm of breeders to preserve the
indigenous Pirot pramenka which was the starting point for following authentic
brands: Pirot lamb, cheese and carpet. Hence the biological and moral imperative:
to preserve this highly endangered population.

AB - DNA analysis can have great practical application in the
management and successful operation of the farm. The application of DNA
technology is becoming a tremendous challenge for farm breeding of domestic
animals. In recent years, traditional selection methods have been supplement by the
results of molecular analysis of the genome. Determining the genetic distance of
sheep and goat breeds had practical and multiple significance. Microsatellites are
used widely in the selection, and genomic selection is becoming an increasing
challenge for breeders. The development of SNP chips brings an immense
advanced for rapid and comprehensive analysis of the genome, which is of great
importance for the successful selection and Genomic selection in sheep
concentrated on all aspects of genetic and production directions. However, it
should be noted that genomic selections in sheep breeding, and especially in goat
breeding, take place at a slower pace compared to cattle breeding.

AB - Cryptosporidiosis is an anthropozoonosis caused by coccidia of the family Cryptoporididae, which may
cause a serious health problem for kids in the first weeks of life. In our paper we presented results of
examination of goat cryptosporidiosis in Serbia. In period 2016-2019 we examined 197 goat herds.
Total of 1576 faecal smears were examined by Sheather’s sugar floatation technique and modified
Ziehl–Neelsen staining technique. Cryptosporidiosis were found at 119 herds. Kids between five and
twenty-one days old are the most susceptible. The morbidity varies from 75–100% and the mortality
from 45-50%. Some animals do not develop into chronic cases and become carriers. After infection,
animals either resist the organism, develop a mild infection that is self-limiting, or soon sicken and die.
Based on the performed research, we have established a significant role of cryptosporidiosis in the
development of neonatal enteropathies of kids

breed have used. All animals are approximately have weaned at 90 days of age.
Descriptive statistics, paired sample test, paired differences, measures of
association, correlations and regression of body weights between female lambs and
their parents have done. A complementary least body weights at 30 days and
weaning between dams and lambs but utmost weight at 30 days, the lambs were
higher while at weaning, the dams had higher weight. It can observe that the
averages on body weights the rams were the highest, followed by lambs and the
lowest the dams’ body weights. The coefficient of determination of R2 varies from
low to high, indicating that the lamb's body weight has more influenced by other
factors that we have not considered. There were significant correlations between
lamb body weight at birth and sire/dam body weight at birth. The results
showed highly significant correlations of lamb's body weight at 30 days with dams
but with sires, positive and very low. There had positive but no
significant correlation between lamb body weight at weaning and sire body weight
at weaning. Lamb body weight at weaning and dam body weight at weaning are

AB - Crossbreeding serves as a predictable and cost-effective method
to genetically increase lamb body weight by mating two or more breeds of sheep.
The crossing over breed comes to a far greater number of combinations of genes
and thus is more likely to express favorable allele carriers of economically
important traits. The phenomenon of heterosis has used since the beginning of the
last century. However, its genetic basis has remained unclear. From the very
beginning of the knowledge of heterosis to the present day, there are several
theories, but neither theory able to answer all questions that arise regarding the
apparent strength of the F1 generation offspring. Not assert anything about the
genetic or molecular phenomenon that causes heterosis. It has been increasingly
experimentally confirmed that heterosis is the result of highly complex interactions
within the genome as well as between the genome and the environment. In Serbia,
some activity of domestic researchers regarding crossbreeding of sheep after the
Second World War has been recorded up to date. It found out that crosses have a
higher body weight than the maternal base in the F1 generation. In other words,
they had better fattening capacity than purebreds. However, the results are not
always in line with expectations due to the influence of various known and
unknown factors. This review paper aims to draw attention to the phenomenon of
heterosis through experience in its application in Serbia, in the hope that this
biological phenomenon would clarify in the near future by applying modern
scientific understandings and technologies.

AB - The aim was to examine the effect of premating age, premating weight of ewes Mis sheep breed on lamb’s birth weight, birth type, gender and the interaction between subject effects. 70 ewes of Mis breed of sheep and their F1 generation lambs produced (Mis x Ile de France) were used in the evaluation. Data concerning the ewes premating age (PMA), premating weight of ewes (PMW), lambs birth weight (LBW), type of birth of lambs (BT), gender of lambs were collected from 122 lambs born. The ewes PMA7 had the heaviest lambs with an average birth weight of 4.72 kg and the lightest was 4.18 kg from ewes PMA5. Some of the extreme values of body weight of mother corresponded to lambs with less weight. The premating weight of Mis sheep mothers with 61 kg was optimal in this regard. The order of birth weight of lambs corresponded with the type of birth of such; the single born lambs had the heaviest birth weight (5.61kg) while the triplets had the lightest birth weight (3.65 kg). According to the number of lambs, born the twin lambs have the highest percentage with 55.74% whereas an equal percentage acquired both for single and triplets with 22.13%. PMA, PMW, BT and the interaction effect between PMA*PMW significantly influence lambs birth weight (LBW). However, the Gender of lambs and the interaction effect between PMA*Gender, PMW*Gender, PMA*BT, PMW*BT found no influence on lambs birth weight (LBW).

AB - The high price of protein nutrients as well as import orientation
have triggered the demand for alternative protein sources in the feeding of lambs.
In addition, it is necessary to take into account the degree of degradability of
proteins. In order to ensure optimal amino acid pool for high genetic capacity of
lamb growth, it is important to provide a protein fraction that avoids degradation in
the rumen. An excellent source of protein that slowly degrades in the rumen is fish
meal. However, given the recommendation of its non-use, the effects of the use of
Eko fish meal, as a fishmeal substitute in diet of lambs of average body weight of
about 14 kg and age of 30 days, were examined. The source of protein did not
significantly affect the growth rate and the efficiency of food utilization in the
lambs of MIS population in fattening (P>0.05), suggesting that fish meal can be
successfully replaced by Eco Fish Meal. As an alternative to soybeans, in diet for
lambs in fattening, the following were used: sunflower meal with the addition of
fibrolithic enzyme, lupine, fodder peas, fodder beans were used, while in the more
exotic areas the following were used: castor cake, pomegranate peel, product
obtained after rice fermentation without any harmful effect on the biological
efficiency of growth and food conversion.

variance has shown that month of birth significantly affects lambs birth weight
(P<.005). Results shows a highly significant effect of year on lambs birth weight
(P<.001). The highest mean average birth weight of lambs showed on the second
year. Regarding of season, lambs had the highest body weight in spring and
winter, and the smallest in autumn but despite the differences in weight, season did
not show any significant effect on lambs birth weight (P>.005). Sex of lambs
showed no significant effect on lambs birth weight (P>.005). The birth type
significantly affects birth weight of lambs (P<.001). The highest body weight are

Thanks to that, these breeds are characterized by the wide adaptability, disease resistance, expressed maternal instinct, relatively high fertility and a long productive life-time. The productivity of these genotypes is relatively low, which led to a drastic reduction in the number of head of locally adapted breeds, simultaneously emphasizing the more productive genotypes. These trends led to loss of genetic diversity. The consequence of these practices in sheep and goat farming is that most of the locally adapted races are endangered in different degrees (from high to critically endangered), according to the criteria of the valid Rulebook. Genotypes of sheep and goat observed in this study belong to a group of genetic resources. According to the Institute for animal husbandry's annual report for Central Serbia in 2017, number of heads for most of locally adapted breeds is in slight increase, but still is not satisfactory. Thus, the number of active animals registered in flockbook for sheep and goats by races are 10386 for Svrljig pramenka, 686 Lipa pramenka, Krivovir pramenka 616, Karakachan pramenka 139, Pirot pramenka 124, Bardoka 94 animals, Balkan goat 121 and Serbian white goat 145 animals. The highest values of live body weight (BW) for the lamb were found in the Lipa lambs (BW at birth 3,44 kg, BW after 30 days 11,79 kg and BW at weaning 27,92 kg), and the Serbian white goat's kids (BW at birth 2,56 kg, BW after 30 days 7.68 kg and BW at weaning 16,04 kg). The highest fertility indexes were observed in Svrljig strain (1,28) and the Balkan goats (1,51). The protection and conservation of sheep and goat genetic resources in the Republic of Serbia is still insufficient, although there is a shift in their conservation. However, urgent protection measures must be taken in the form of in situ and ex situ conservation to prevent the loss of genetic resources forever.

AB - The effect of Eco-fish meal, as an alternative to fish meal, on the production performance of the lambs of the Mis population in the intensive fattening, was investigated. The experiment was carried out on 40 lambs, the average age of 30 days, divided in 2 groups. In addition to mother's milk, the lambs were given a concentrated mixture and a lucerne hay, at will. Isoprotein forage mixtures (16% of total proteins) differed in terms of the protein component. The protein source for treatment I had fish meal, while the animals on treatment II consumed EcoFish, a herbal substitute for fish meal, which consisted of domestic foods of known origin such as genetically unmodified and thermally treated meal of decorticated soybean grains, soybean protein isolates, gluten, livestock yeast with the addition of minerals, amino acids, vitamins, enzymes and other additives. Statistical processing of the obtained data was done using the SPSS STATISTICA, Version 20. On treatments I and II, the average daily lamb gain was 320 and 283 g, respectively, without statistical significance. The consumption of dry matter and proteins in analogue treatments was 0.819 and 0.823 kg, and 152.62 and 157.04 g, respectively. The dry matter consumption per kilogram of gain (kg/kg of gain) was 2.56 and 2.91; of energy (MJ NEM/kg): 17.65 and 20.25; of total proteins: 476.9 and 554.9 g, respectively. The protein efficiency ratio - PER (g of gain/g of consumed protein) in analogue treatments was: 2.09 and 1.80. There were no statistically significant differences between examined treatments (P> 0.05). Considering that the source of protein did not significantly affect the intensity of growth and the use of food by lambs of Mis population in intensive fattening (P>0.05), fish meal can be replaced by Eco-fish meal - plant protein, since according to Commission Decision 9/2001 on BCE protection (OJEC, 2001), there is a distance to the use of fish meal, as a source of protein.

AB - The Tuva Republic is one of the main sheep breeding centers in the Russian
Federation. The Tuvan short-fat-tailed sheep is a unique local breed of the Tuva Republic.
The studied breed has sheep of steppe type and mountain type. Each type of sheep was
having formed according to relief of the ground and environment features. The
breed originated in different parts from steppe and mountains. This study aim was to
show the genetic polymorphism of calpastatin gene (CAST) in ram populations of two
main breeding centers for tuvan short-fat-tailed sheep. Genomic DNA was isolated from
51 animals from Municipal unitary enterprise "Despen" (steppe type of sheep), and 100
animals from State unitary enterprise "Malchyn" (mountain type of sheep). Genomic
DNA was extracted using the commercial kits. The detection was done using the
restriction fragment length polymorphism of the polymerase chain reaction products
(PCR-RFLPs). We used a pair of primers: F: 5’-TGGGGCC
CAATGACGCCATCGATG-3’ and R: 5’-GGTGGAGCAGCACTTCTGATCACC-3’ to
get 622 b.p. fragment of CAST gene. The PCR products are having digested with MspI restriction enzyme. Calpastatin locus digested with MspI has shown
three genotypes: MM, MN and NN. The frequency of MM, MN and NN genotypes were
80.39%, 17.65% and 1.96% in steppe type of breed and 77.00%, 22.00% and 1.00% in
the mountain type of breed. The highest allelic frequency was for allele M (0.89
in MUE "Despen" rams and 0.88 in SUE "Malchyn" rams). Allelic frequency of allele N
had lower values of 0.11 in steppe type and 0.12 in mountain type.

AB - Accurate and precise milk recording is one of the most important moments for a successful selection of milking goats. In this context, breeders are constantly making efforts to find the most suitable and cheapest methods for conducting of tests for milk production. The goal of this research was to compare the A4 method (as referent method) with AC method (as alternative method), for determination of milk production, on the day of recording of the indigenous Balkan goat, in the period of 2014-2016 with milking of goats in the morning and evening. It was determined that the difference between the predicted daily milk yield with one milking (in the morning or evening) and the measured milk yield using the A4 method is too low and almost negligible. With the analysis of all factors (year, lactation and number of milk tests), it was determined that the prediction of total daily milk yield, based on the evening milking, provides more accurate result, in relation to the prediction during morning milking, in cases when using the AC method.

AB - The objective of the present study was to investigate nutritional and metabolic status in Simmental cows during early and mid-lactation. Fifteen early lactating cows and 15 mid lactating cows were chosen for the investigation. Blood samples were collected to measure beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), triglycerides (TG), glucose and the activity of aspartate transaminase (AST). Early lactation as compared to mid lactating cows were found to have significantly higher (P (lt) 0.05) blood serum concentrations of NEFA, BHB and AST and lower blood serum concentrations of glucose (P (lt) 0.05) and TG (P>0.05). Significantly negative correlations were observed between BHB and glucose (P (lt) 0.01), BHB and TG (P (lt) 0.05), NEFA and glucose (P (lt) 0.05). Significantly positive correlations were observed between NEFA and BHB (P (lt) 0.05), NEFA and AST (P (lt) 0.05), glucose and TG (P (lt) 0.01). The results suggest that these parameters can serve as useful indicators of the nutritional and metabolic status of dairy cows during lactation.

AB - The effects of the level of non-degradable protein in diet on fattening performance and carcass characteristics of intensively fattened lambs are presented in the paper. The aim of this study was to determine the optimal level of non-degradable protein in the diet of weaned lambs fattened intensively. The experiment was conducted on 60 lambs of MIS population weaned at 60 days of age, divided into three groups. The effect of the use of three concentrated mixtures which differed in terms of the share of non-degradable protein at the rumen level was studied: 43% (I), 51% (II) and 58% (III). The average daily gain of lambs included in the treatments I : II : III was 0.169 : 0.205 : 0.227 kg, respectively. Conversion of dry matter (kg/kggain) on analogue treatments was 4.54 : 3.71 : 3.30; energy (MJ NEM/kg): 33.77 : 29.37 : 26.25; total protein (g/kg): 732 : 596 : 549. Values of yield of warm carcass with offal, observed per treatments I : II : III were as follows: 58.70 : 58.02 : 57.42%. Meat yield of category I (thigh, loin) on analogue treatments amounted to 37.27 : 37.35 : 37.51%, category II (back, shoulder, neck) 33.9 : 32.67 : 32.83% and category III (chest with a forearm and shanks): 27.78 : 29.59 : 29.10%. The ratio of muscle and bone tissue in the treatments with 48 : 51 : 58% non-degradable protein was 2.5:1; 2.9:1; and 2.8:1. This research has shown that the best fattening performance was achieved by lambs on treatment with 58% RUP while meat yield and morphological composition of the carcass side were not under significant influence of the studied treatment.

AB - One of the new promising candidate genes defining productive qualities of sheep is MEF2B. Protein from the MEF2 group encoded by it affects the production of myostatin and the expression of the genes responsible for the growth of skeletal muscle fibers. Thus, the knowledge of the MEF2B gene structure is important for genomic selection. We have studied the structure of the MEF2B gene at sheep of Severokavkazskaya breed bred in Russia. To detect alleles we use NimbleGen sequencing technology by Roche (USA). As a result, it was revealed 14 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) at the given breed. The discovered SNPare located in not coding areas. From them 7 polymorphisms are in the area of 5' upstream gene in loci: c.-1713, c.-1319, c.-839, c.-321, c.-246, c.-161, c.-3; 6 polymorphisms are in introns, loci: c.55-51, c.258+312, c.258+380, c.259-52, c.452+95, c.452+ 103, 1 SNP is in 3' downstream gene, c.*252. Two of the identified SNPs are significantly connected with high indices of meat productivity: c.55-51 and c.259-52. At the same time it was not possible to find out the impact on productivity of c.-1713 polymorphism. Our investigation is a base of next research of affection of different MEF2B gene alleles on meat quality and can be used to prepare PCR test-system for genomic selection.

AB - The aim of this study was to investigate changes of serum testosterone, scrotal circumference, body weight, and semen characteristics in a Meat Institute Sheep (MIS) population during their developing period (between 3 and 17 months). Correlative relationships among parameters were also tested. Body weight and scrotal circumference were measured monthly, blood samples for testosterone levels were taken bimonthly (3-17 months), and semen samples were collected by an electroejaculator between the ages of 9 and 17 months. The analysis showed that the average serum testosterone levels ranged from 1.83 to 13.28 ng/mL and significantly depended on the age of the lambs (P (lt) 0.05). The trend in the level of serum testosterone was characterized by pronounced variability throughout the study period. Changes in scrotal circumference and body weight were significantly dependent on age. Ejaculate volume, sperm motility, and the percentage of live spermatozoa increased with age, except for the percentage of abnormal spermatozoa, which decreased with age. Correlations among serum testosterone, scrotal circumference, and body weight were moderately to highly positive and highly significant. All parameters of semen quality were poorly correlated with testosterone and body weight, while scrotal circumference was in moderate correlation only with ejaculate volume and live sperm count (P (lt) 0.05).

AB - The purpose of the survey was to determine a bond between certain factors that affect most of the production traits in crossbreeds between Awassi and Ovchepolian indigenous sheep in Macedonia. We implemented 1145 individual lactation controls in two years of production (2012 and 2013). The impact of individual factors is studied using F-test and the analyses are made using SPSS set of programs. Many factors (lactation, lambing month and number of milk controls) had highly significant impact (P (lt) 0.001) on daily milk production (morning, evening and total milk, fat percentage and fat kg) in this breed of sheep. Only fertility had no impact on any of the examined factors, with the exception of total daily milk, on which manifested with highly significant impact (P (lt) 0.01). The average milk yield in examined crossbred sheep was 109 ± 0.479 l in two years of production, while the production of milked milk was 72 ± 0.421 l for the same period of time. The length of lactation period in these sheep was average 203 ± 0.61 days, for two analysed years. In relation to the age, in second lactation sheep was determined somewhat higher daily milk yield (0.478 ±0.01 l.), compared to sheep in first lactation (0.475 ± 0.01 l.). This is quite logical, keeping in mind the lactation curve in sheep, especially those of dairy breeds to which Awassi breed belongs.

AB - Despite the very favorable natural conditions, animal breeding in Serbia are still looking for a way to stabilize production. In the last decade of the 20th century, livestock in Serbia almost halved. It reduced the number of animals and total production of all types of meat. The small farms were dominant in Serbian agriculture with an average area between 3 and 4 ha. At the end of 2014, compared to 2006 the number of animals in Serbia reduced by 16.81% in cattle, 19.09% in pigs, and 26.75% in goats. Compared to 2006, we see that the fund sheep in 2014 increased by 10.98%. production of cow's milk at the end of 2014 decreased compared to 2006 by 5.98%. Unlike cattle, in sheep is an evident trend of increase in milk production by as much as 25% in the period. Goat milk from 2006 to 2014, varied and we can say that in 2014 we produced less milk 7.31%, however, shows that the quantity of milk per animal increased, as a result of selection and better growing conditions. The amount of wool decreased by 2,52% in 2014, however, due to the low interest for wool farmers is not recorded, so that the statistical indicators are not entirely realistic. Egg production increased by 21.7%, in line with the growing number of of poultry. Serbia produces 452.000 tons of meat. From that number 73,000 tons of beef, 27,000 tons of sheep meat, 258,000 tons of pork, and 94,000 tons of poultry meat. Total meat production in our country has a tendency of stagnation or slight decline.

AB - Animal live body weight (BW), body measurements, and their inter-relationship and correlation is imperative for determining genetic potential. In some circumstances in the absence of weighing scales, the body measurements has been used to predicts the live body weight of animals which at the same time is exclusively important to make the right decision at the selection of sheep. The aim of the study was to assess body measurement and the correlation between live body weight and the morphometric measurements of Mis maternal ewes as well as to determine the best fitted regression model for predicting its live weight. A positive correlation between body measurements of Mis maternal ewes ranged from very weak 0.035 (RH-PBW) to high 0.930 (HAW-RH), while a very weak negative correlation ranged from -.016 (HAW-GSB) to -.088 (GSB-RH). With regards to the correlations between body weights and some morphometric measurements showed that the highest correlation was between BW and HG which is 0.853 while the lowest correlation was 0.145 between BW and RH.

AB - The purpose of this study was to investigate fertility in the ewes of MIS sheep population following synchronized oestrus in anoestrus season and natural oestrus during breeding season. Research was carried out on an experimental sheep farm of the Institute for Animal Husbandry in Belgrade. The study included 76 ewes and 6 rams of MIS sheep population (three breed crosses of Pirot Pramenka, Württemberg and Ile de France breed). In anoestrus season, oestrus was synchronized in 43 ewes using progestagen impregnated vaginal sponges (30 mg fluorogestone acetate) in combination with 750 IU PMSG. During the breeding season, 33 ewes were bred naturally to 6 rams, without the use of exogenous hormones. Teaser rams with marking-harnesses and abdominal aprons were used to detect females in oestrus. Obtained fertility and productivity results in anoestrus and breeding season were as follows: lambing rate 69.77% (30/43) and 100% (33/33) (P<0.05).
