AB - Project research includes investigation of environmental conditions in which sheep are raised, also breed structure in region of Stara planina mountain and genetic potential of sheep population for production of high quality lamb meat. Heterosis effect is also investigated, and new created genotypes, beside improved performance in regard to gain, feed conversion and dressing percentage, will have as consequence improvement of the quality and quantity of carcass and meat of lambs. New created genotypes can be successfully raised in hilly, hilly-mountainous and plain regions. Existing technological solutions in regard to housing of sheep and lambs will be innovated by introduction of several variants and systems of nutrition which would include maximum use of roughage - pasture, hey and silage for grown heads of livestock, with addition of adequate quantities of concentrated feeds, also solutions introducing the highest degree of rationalization in production of high quality lamb meat will be selected. Floral composition and nutritive value of grass mass at our disposal as well as grain feeds are to be analyzed. Based on forage plant base at our disposal and quality of feeds the concrete programme of nutrition of lambs according to fattening phase will be applied. During fattening, effect on nutrition on production performance (gain of body mass and feed conversion) will be monitored. Reproductive traits of sheep - dams and ram sires will be analyzed, also planned health protection of animals carried out. Also economical efficiency of organized lamb breeding for production of high quality lamb meat analyzed. Most favorable anatomical categories for packaging will be determined as well as physical, chemical and sensory parameters of the quality of lamb meat defined. Special attention will be directed towards the quantity and quality of obtained lamb carcasses and compared with EU standards.

AB - Development of the improvement theory, improvement of the technological process of production, especially greater demand for high quality lamb sheep milk cheeses (yellow hard cheese, white soft cheese) and wool of improved traits, demands modernization of organizational forms of selection in sheep production. Activities of people engaged in selection are concentrated on several directions focusing on the defining the organizational scheme based on the fact that mass selection which is most frequent in sheep production, could be more efficient with adequate organization. The opinion is prevailing that the best way of organizing is according to the principle of pyramid. Selection procedure within the pyramid is question of agreement between the genetic scientist and farmer depending on the improvement objective. Beside this pyramid organization, in countries with advanced stage of sheep production, other selection programs are present which represent not replacement of the pyramid organization but are expression of the will to better determine the economical parameters and increase, the fanner's profit Special attention in sheep selection is directed towards the providing of unique scientific approach to the evaluation of the animal based on objective productivity control. Software is developed for more efficient realization of the selection procedure and genetic information systems introduced on relation farmer - selection service.

AB - Selection of sheep according to milk yield is increasingly present especially in Mediterranean countries due to production of high quality cheeses, for instance hard cheese. This demands knowledge of genetic parameters of milk yield traits, as well as of the effect of paragenetic factors. Investigation of these paragenctic factors was objective of this paper. Investigations were carried out in the region of Stara planina mountain on population of Pirot Pramenka sheep breed. The effect of year, lactation, type of birth and number of offspring on milk yield was investigated. It was established that the effect of year as paragenetic factor varied from not significant to significant. Lactation had significant effect on milk yield since the lowest value for the milk quantity was registered in the first and the highest in third lactation. Type of birth had no significant influence on investigated trait. The size of litter had significant influence on milk yield since higher quantity of milk was established in case of sheep with twins compared to ship with single offspring.

AB - Livestock husbandry participation in total agriculture production of Serbia is unfavorable (41% of total value). Sheep and goat breeding particularly lag behind. Sheep production participate with extremely low percent in total world production in this branch. Sheep and goat breeding importance was declining for a long period of time. An increase of interest for sheep breeding was noticed in early nineties since it was more resistant to the economy hardships than pig and poultry production. Concerning the natural conditions, cultural heritage and other social aspects, regional and geo-strategy importance of this production, we consider this increase of interests for sheep and goat breeding necessary to support. Sheep and goat breeding prospective should be seen as a valuable component of the highland rural revival, since this production have considerable advantage comparing to other branches of livestock husbandry in the present private possession dominated environment. However valorization of this potentials could not be increased without transforming complete agro industry and social environment. Important role in this process of changing have state and its institutions, but also market and related components of total national economy structure. If this changes provide favorable environment we could expect soon a significant increase of the amount and quality of the sheep and goats production. .
